Gilmore Girls - I'd Rather Be In Philadelphia

Surgery, fish and jazz, you get a little bit everything in this week's oddly emotional episode.

Continuing where last week's episode left off, Richard Gilmore suffered a heart attack while teaching a class at Yale. So, Rory is doing her best to reach Lorelai to let her know what happened. Lorelai is helping Babette move a plant and ignores Rory's first two calls, but is finally able to break away from Babette's babblings of lingerie and who knows what else. Rory breaks the news and Lorelai rushes to the hospital.

Once she makes it to the hospital the doctors fill her and Rory in on how Richard is doing. He did have a heart attack, but he is doing alright. They did an EKG and are waiting on the results, but they believe there is a blockage and depending on how bad it is they may have to do surgery. Shortly after this Emily arrives and, of course, she is more angry and bitter against the nurses than she is sad about Richard, or so it seems. She goes on to complain to Lorelai how the country club won't let her take her cell phone to play tennis and it took them forever let her know about Richard, then rambles about how she knows there are drug deals going on at the club. You can always expect Emily to bring a little bit of silliness to every situation, you can't help but love her.

During Emily's ranting and raving Logan arrives to Rory's delight, via helicopter. Because every young professional travels on helicopters these days. He later talks of his $3 million trust fund. I don't know what it is, but I don't trust this guy. Rory can do better, much better. Anyway, despite my questions about his character, Logan was a good guy tonight and was more than happy to fetch Emily a cup of tea. The doctors come back with an update on the results of the EKG and reveal that the blockage is worse than they had thought and need to do surgery as soon as possible.

The group makes their way into Richard's hospital room, which Emily uniquely describes as "intimate." Richard is in fairly good spirits, but tells them he'd "rather be in Philadephia." Lorelai couldn't help but try to think of the good things Philadelphia contributes to society, she's so funny.

The next scene takes us to Luke's diner where Zach is serving as a waiter filling in for Lane, who doesn't appear in this episode. Hopefully she pops out those twins one of these days. Babette comes to tell Luke about Richard, so Luke rushes to the hospital. Emily is not too thrilled when she sees him arrive, but is happy to throw some chores at him, such as picking up Richard's car and driving it home, not to mention filling it up with gas, and shoveling snow. Emily then sends Logan and Rory to have some fish delivered to the house and to get some things from the house to bring back to the hospital.

Like you and I, Lorelai is also starting to wonder whether Emily is even concerned with Richard's health. Since she arrived at the hospital she has been more focused on complaining, making phone calls to rearrange reservations, and, what really irks Lorelai, calling Richard's lawyer to have his will faxed to her at the hospital. This sends Lorelai over the edge and refuses to eat dinner with Emily - in the cafeteria nonetheless. Lorelai later goes off on Emily about her actions and Emily breaksdown (really!). She tearfully explains to Lorelai that her life is about helping Richard in everything he does from meeting with business acquaintances to fixing his nightcap, and she can't stand the thought of losing him. It's a new side of Emily we haven't really seen before -- she does have feelings!

After this Richard gets out of surgery and is doing well. Emily is the only one that can see him at first so she fills him in on every detail he missed while he was under. Meanwhile, Lorelai tries calling Chris for the third time and again receives voicemail. She leaves him a voicemail telling him "it's not ok" that he's not there. You get the sense that these two aren't going to last very long, as if we didn't see it coming.

Luke gets back after finishing all of Emily's errands and even brings food. As he and Lorelai are talking Chris finally arrives at the hospital to see the two talking in the hallway. After a brief pause Chris walks up to them and Lorelai is somewhat excited, just somewhat. Chris tells Luke he should be going. Lorelai doesn't say anything to stick up for Luke which I thought was just a little rude after everything he did for her. I don't like how she acts around Chris, it's not the real Lorelai we have come to know. Emily senses the tension between the two and after Chris walks away she tells Lorelai that things will be ok and that "every cloud has a silver lining." I think I like this nicer side of Emily.

Next week's episode looks to bring Logan and Rory even closer, but the rift between Lorelai and Chris continues to grow wider. She tells Chris that he is the man she "wants to want." Whatever that means.

I have to agree. There's

I have to agree. There's too much up and down going on with Lorelai. They rushed into this relationship and now they're trying to take it back to Luke?! We've watched her suffer long enough. If it wasn't for the talent those actresses have and how well they know their characters, there wouldn't be anything left without the writers. This is too good of a show to torpedo it with too much drama and too weak writing.

I agree! Can't we just leave

I agree! Can't we just leave well enough alone, enough with the back and forth I wish they would just decide on who she's going to be with and let her be happy for a while. As soon as I get used to the way things are going they change it again! I'm just happy they are leaving Rory and Logan alone, hopefully they aren't going to mess with them next!

I really love Gilmore Girls,

I really love Gilmore Girls, but I want Luke and Lorelai back together. I think Christopher is all about himself or has been in the past anyway... Luke is completely in love with her, and she deserves happiness for once!! I agree about Logan something isn't right with him, he's hiding something. I wish Jess would come back on the show and get together with Rory. They made a much better couple, Rory is too fake with Logan.
