I can't believe this is episode 20 of Ugly Betty. It has already become a show I know I'll miss over the summer. Thank god for the distractions of Netflix! Last we saw Betty, she had been hurt by Daniel and Christina. Can her friends win her favor back? And can Daniel deal with the even larger issue of his statuatory evening with a scheming foreign model?
BETTY'S BFFs: After a humiliating night being lectured by Daniel and betrayed by Christina, Betty feels like calling in sick. Being the good girl she is, she decides to just suck it up and head in. Upon arriving at Mode, however, she is met by Daniel, Christina and Henry all clamoring for her attention. Unable to face and forgive them all, she turns around and heads back home. She doesn't feel well after all.
Commiserating with Hilda at the salon school, Betty is told she's too harsh on her friends. Hilda reminds Betty of her high school BFF, who Betty cut out of her life after one mistake during their anti-prom. She needs to tell people how she feels, and then work towards forgiving them. Armed with such good sense, Betty heads back to Mode for a second try.
There she finds Henry and Daniel trying to solve the problem of Petra, whose mother will turn Daniel in for sleeping with her 16-year-old-ass if he doesn't get her on the cover of Mode. They have already appealed to Alexis, who saw the dilemma simply as a new way to get revenge on Bradford. She'll put Petra on the cover, but only if Daniel resigns.
As they sit in the conference room going over the paperwork, a distraught Betty and Henry lounge opposite Petra and her mother, waiting. Petra foolishly takes out a cigarette and it jars Betty's memory. She saw Petra buy them with an I.D. that puts her over 18. She and Henry snatch the women's purses, toss the passport to Daniel, and prevent him from signing the paperwork just in time. Happy with the victory, they hug each other and share a tender moment...just in time for Charlie (who Henry had been arguing with earlier) to spot them. Ruh-roh.
Later that evening, Betty and Christina talk. Christina says she wants out of the Wilhelmina game, and will either tell her so...or see is she can't overhear anything useful for Betty and Daniel. Betty forgives, even if she isn't ready to forget, and all is right in the Mode world. Daniel, Henry and Christina all have their BFF Betty back.
Inspired by the day, Betty calls her high school friend to reconcile. Aw.
SANTOS STEPS UP: Betty awakes to find Hilda climbing in her window- she's seeing Santos again and is sneaking around like she's in high school. Ignacio isn't fooled, and warns Hilda about Santos. When she ignores his warnings, he brings Santos in himself and gives him a stern talking-to. He's disappointed the family too many times, and Ignacio won't let it happen again.
Later, when Hilda and Santos meet for a date, Santos surprises everyone when he proposes. Ignacio is shocked, Justin is supportive, and Hilda is uncertain. She finally decides to listen to her heart and accepts. The newly engaged couple hugs. It's a good thing Drive got cancelled, because it looks like Santos is around for awhile.
THE BRAZILIAN BRIBE: Bradford Meade wants his "daughter" Alexis off Mode and out of town. When a ten million dollar bribe doesn't have the desired effect, new conquest Willie gives him an idea. Why not get the hunky Brazilian Mode Creative Director to seduce her and convince her to come back to the tropics with him in exchange for a bump to editor. Everything looks to be going according to plan, except for Willie. She may have become invaluable to Bradford and his libido, but as it was with Fey, he will not leave his wife for her.
THE STRAIGHT CLOSET: Amanda meets a hot new designer and helps him plan for his meeting with Wilhelmina. When a late-night try on session turns surprisingly sexy, Amanda learns he's a "faux-mo". He's in the "straight closet" so he can be taken seriously as a designer. Amanda doesn't mind- she's happy to sneak around as long as there's free clothes involved.
CLIFFHANGER!!!: Ignacio's new lawyer calls at the end of the episode with bad news. He's being sent back to Mexico.
