The long awaited season 4 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy begins with a classic sunrise over the city of Seattle, the space needle and of course, narration by Meredith Grey. Our favorite interns are now residents and they are off to a bustling start giving orders and laying down the rules for their interns. Including George O’Malley, I still can’t believe he has to be an intern again and Lexie Grey who is one of Cristina’s lucky interns. Izzie’s interns
Izzie is jumping at every chance to talk to George who will barely look at her. Cristina has not see Burke since the wedding nor has Meredith seen “McDreamy.” Though both are playing cool and pretending it isn’t bothering them. Things get awkward when the gang tell the new interns to get away from their usual hang out, that it was only for residents. Today is also the first day of Callie being chief resident. Bailey is still bitter and rightfully so. She takes every chance she can to make sure the chief knows she is not happy about his choice and doesn’t want to talk about it.
Derek is pretty desperate with no friends left. He is asking anyone who will listen if they’d like to get a drink. Bailey and the chief both decline, but Sloan happily jumps in. Obviously trying to rekindle the friendship he and Derek once had. Derek quickly declines.
While Lexie tries to dig up some information on Meredith from George, ambulances arrive with trauma patients from a multiple car accident involving a deer. Thing progress quickly and the interns are looking pretty green. As Cristina announces the driver’s time of death he takes a breath and the residents and interns are off. Inside the doctors are already working on a pregnant woman who had to have her arm amputated. She keeps going on about needing her arm and Sloan wants to try and reattach it. The only problem is they can’t find her arm. Another patient named, Joey also came in on the ambulance keeps complaining about being hungry and as we soon find out, it is an endless hunger. He is so hungry in fact that he keeps swiping cotton balls to eat. This really made me cringe. When a guy runs in with an arm he found in the road his son is going on about a “she” being hurt out in the truck. Little do Izzie and her interns know what a surprise awaits them as they run outside to find not quite the “she” they were expecting. It’s not a human she awaiting them, but a deer she.
Back inside Derek and Cristina discover from an x-ray that the previously dead guy’s skull is disconnected from the rest of his spinal cord and Derek has to perform surgery. As Korev’s interns work with Joey the hungry guy, we see how hungry he really is… as he shoves paper clips into his mouth and swallows. In the other room Meredith tries to calm the pregnant girl down as she breaks down about being alone just as Sloan comes in with good news announcing that he will be able to reattach her arm in surgery.
George continues to mope and try to avoid the gang as much as possible. I’m sure he feels completely embarrassed and bitter about having to re-do his internship. Callie tries to reassure him, but he pretty much blows her off. He continues to blow her off when she tells him that she might be pregnant. Callie acts surprised, but come on what was she expecting?
Next we go back outside where the father is trying to convince Izzie and his son that the deer is not worth saving and is meant to be eaten. Personally, I thought that was a pretty cruel thing to say. Izzie tells the man she’s not helping his son, she’s helping Bambi and starts and IV.
We finally get to see the crew together as Korev, Izzie, Cristina, Meredith gossip as Meredith works on the severed arm. George comes in and they all try to welcome him like old times, but he again rejects them. I think he’s dealing pretty well with the whole intern again dilemma…right. Derek finally breaks the news that Burke has resigned to Cristina and she announces that she is “fine.”
As Izzie searches information on deer anatomy online, we get to see a heartbreaking scene with the previously dead guy and his family. His wife is told that this could be the last time she sees him by the very blunt Cristina. I know she’s a great doctor and everything, but she really needs to work on her bedside manner. His two kids and wife say goodbye and he is off to surgery.
Izzie confronts George about not talking to her for 17 days. George blows up a little and makes yet another reference to having to be an intern again. George mistakenly thinks that Izzie is calling her Bambi. Izzie compares herself to Bambi, hmm could this be why she is trying to save Bambi?
Sloan asks Derek if he’d like to have a drink again since he doesn’t have Meredith anymore and Derek defends her. Meanwhile Meredith is still working with her very pregnant girl who is still upset about being alone. Meredith calms her down and continues with the surgery. Alex goes back to check on his hungry patient, Joey and finds that a lot of his tools are missing. Conveniently just as he walks in Joey begins to choke and everyone starts to figure out where the missing items have been going. Alex has someone page Dr. Bailey and they try to save Joey.
Outside the father tries to explain the circle of life to his son. Izzie isn’t amused and goes on to lecture the father about how hard it is to hold onto hope. The deer goes into B-Fib and they have to shock back to life. The deer stands up and Izzie along with everyone else present is absolutely shocked.
Back in the OR the armless woman goes into labor. Her water breaks and there is no time so George delivers the baby “without” jostling as Sloan advises. Sloan continues to be his cold self and they continue to reattach her arm that she is definitely going to need in order to hold that new baby. Surgery to reattach the man’s skull to his spinal cord isn’t going quite as smooth. The man moves slightly and the team has to rush to stabilize him as any movement could kill him. Cristina tries to talk to the man who is under anesthesia explaining that everything will not be ok if he moves.
Callie and Alex continue to clash when she breaks into the OR where he and Bailey are performing surgery on Joey. Bailey stands up for Alex and says he knows how to prioritize. Obviously this makes Callie even less happy and she punishes Alex by demanding a fully dictated chart by the end of the night. I know she has to show everyone whose boss and everything, but I think she’s taking the power trip a little far. As Callie leaves Bailey begins the seemingly endless task of pulling objects from Joey’s stomach. She goes on to explain that he must suffer from Pikah, the uncontrollable urge to eat. The chief comes in obviously to try and talk to her again about why he didn’t choose her. Bailey still seems uninterested in hearing his story. Later on, we get to hear his explanation. The chief explains that she belongs in the OR and he knows she will be a great surgeon.
George is outside the hospital nursery looking at the baby he just delivered when Lexie Grey comes up. She gushes over the cute babies and George shows her the one he just delivered and she is baffled as to why he isn’t jumping for joy. George blows up again, kind of a trend in this episode isn’t it? He admits that he has done it before and it’s like déjà vu for him. Lexie tries to reassure him and tells him that it’s no one’s fault. George finally vents and admits that he blames everyone else for not passing. Callie got the cards. Lexie vents too, I’m hoping this will help George figure out he isn’t the only one with problems. She explains that it wasn’t her plan to come to Seattle Grace that she was set to do her internship at Mass General, but her mother died and her father is too drunk to even know what year it is. She goes on to vent about Meredith. I think this wakes George up a little. I’m interested to see where this relationship goes.
Sloan finally approaches Derek and admits that he needs Derek. He’s the one that needs a friend, going as far as using the line “I want you back.” Though he immediately regrets it neither of them can get passed the awkwardness and they agree to have a drink another night.
Outside Izzie watches animal control take Bambi, the deer. She addresses her interns saying she’s sure the day didn’t go as they had planned, but they better adjust their expectations. She explains that she’s the type of doctor that let’s a kid convince her she can do the impossible. Finally she gets them back, telling them that she got stuck with the “dud” interns so she also has to adjust her expectations. They all act shocked.
Back in the hospital the wife and kids are reunited with the man who just had his skull reattached to his spinal cord. Cristina watches from afar, obviously thinking about what could have been. In the locker room all of the interns jump at the chance to ask George about delivering the baby. It looks like he might be ok after all.
In the hangout with rain pouring outside, Alex and Cristina both admit that they miss Ava and Burke. Alex offers Cristina some of the change from Joey’s stomach. At the same time, Bailey offers encouragement to Callie. Outside the elevator, Meredith makes a choice with Derek on one side and Lexie on the other. She goes with Derek. They go to the sleep room where they break up and then proceed to kiss and have make up sex and are they really broken up? The cycle continues.
George shows up at Izzie’s house and after 17 days he finally says it. “I love you too.” I know tons of viewers are sick of the drama, but I’m dying to see what the season holds for these two. I really want to see them together, but I know it won’t be that easy.
