Grey's Anatomy: Let the Truth Sting (Episode 64)

As the infamous Grey's Anatomy elevator is going up it seems Alex's attraction for Lexie is doing the same. The two share a glance and a smile before all the other annoying little interns crowd their way into the elevator. The interns are abuzz over George, apparently someone forgot to mention to them that he is a repeat intern. They can't believe how much he knows already. Next up on the elevator is Meredith, Derek, and Cristina. Meredith and Derek awkwardly greet each other which Cristina takes note of. She can't believe they are still 'doing it' and Meredith hasn't told her. Izzie, meanwhile, is watching all the elevators waiting to pounce on the one with George. As soon as George steps off the elevator Izzie pounces asking what happened (with asking for a divorce from Callie). George just shakes his head as Callie is right behind him.

Later as everyone is getting their assignments for the morning, Cristina acts all depressed to Meredith whining about Burke and Mama. She's just faking it trying to get a surgery, but for the moment Meredith is buying into the act. Later in the day Cristina is still pulling the depressed bit and Meredith really bites this time. She does just what Cristina wanted. She lets Cristina do a surgery, while she takes over the ER and Cristina's interns. Alex watches the whole thing go down and after Meredith leaves he tells Cristina to cut the act. He tells Cristina that maybe he'll try out the bit too and see if he can get a surgery, but Cristina tells him to find his own pretend emotion.

The Chief introduces Alex to a old new intern named Norman - who is actually Edward Herrmann (he played Richard Gilmore on Gilmore Girls). Alex is not pleased about having Norman as his new intern. He tells Bailey that Norman smells like Arthritis cream. Bailey gives Alex and Norman an assignment in the clinic. The assignment is a teenager, played by Martin Spanjers (he played Rory Hennessy on 8 Simple Rules), who has been lethargic, irritable, and his schoolwork has gone down the drain. The mother is insistent that he's on drugs, which the son flatly denies. Alex tells the mom that it could be a number of things so they'll just have to run some tests. She demands they first do a drug test, which Alex tells her they will do. Norman tries to infuse some of his wisdom into the conversation telling the mom that she is absolutely right to want a drug test and that she's probably right, it's mothers instinct. Alex is beyond annoyed with Norman at this point.

The results results come back later and Norman announces that the kid isn't on drugs. Norman starts to tell the mom that he is just a normal teenager, rebeling, he's raised teenagers of his own so he knows. But, that's not the case with this kid. Out of the blue the kid spouts off something that makes absolutely no sense. It's clear something is wrong. Alex orders a CT scan and labs. Derek looks at the scan later and finds the kid has something pushing up against something else which is what results in the screwed up speech. They need to put in a shunt to fix the problem.

Meredith, George, Sloane and the Chief are with a chatty female patient, probably in her 40's, who has cancer on her tongue. Though it didn't seem bad at first, it turns out that the cancer has spread to 60% of her tongue, therefore they need to do surgery to cut away the pieces of tongue with cancer. They will do the best they can to repair the tongue by using muscle from the leg, but it's doubtful the chatty lady will be able to speak right in the future.

A while later Chief brings up the possibility of them trying out a new, cutting edge surgery that would essentially connect the woman's tongue muscles with her leg muscles. Don't ask me how this stuff works, but apparently this could allow the woman to talk right after surgery. George is in on the conversation and he's unsure about the whole thing. He asks Chief and Sloane whether it's better for them to do a risky surgery that they've never done before or do a surgery that they are really good at and have done many, many times. The Chief is offended. He asks George if he thinks they're too old to learn new ways. Chief and Sloane tell George they've still got it.

Before the tongue cancer lady goes into surgery she is chatting with her two friends. With the thought of possibly never being able to speak again, the two friends encourage her to tell them everything. At first she is hesitant, but then George also encourages her to tell all, so the lady does. She tells her one friend that her butt looks big in her pants, in fact she says all her pants are too tight, she needs to buy new. Then she turns to the other friend and tells her that her breath is horrible, really horrible, and maybe she should see a doctor. She further insults the friend by telling her to get a new haircut, it's not the 80's anymore. The two friends, and George, are shocked. This isn't exactly what they expected. Later as George is rolling the lady to surgery she is regreting that she said anything. She turns to George and tells him that he told her to say anything. He tells her that he's really sorry.

In surgery things seem to be going well at least in the beginning. Things seem to go downhill when Sloane and Chief aren't sure what to do next. They call in Derek to help them figure things out. The surgery goes better with Derek there and the lady will likely be just fine. After surgery as Derek, Sloane and Chief are washing their hands they are gloating about their success. Derek reminds them that he saved their ass and that they had no business doing such a risky surgery.

Izzie pulls George into the room with the really old guy in a coma, where the group used to eat lunch. George is going on and on about his marriage, as usual, but before he and Izzie can get to anything juicy the annoying little interns interrupt. After George leaves the room Izzie has the interns go over what procedures need to be done daily for really old guy in the coma. One of the interns tells Izzie that his name is not "really old guy," but Izzie could careless and continues calling him really old guy. Just as they are getting ready to walk out of the room "really old guy" wakes up from his coma. He tells them that he's planning on dying today and he tells Izzie his name is not "really old guy," it's Charlie. He was in a semi-coma so although he was out of it, he could still hear everything going on. Oh boy, it's like the sang "if walls could talk" except in this case the walls are a really old, coma guy, and now he can talk. The really old guy isn't that thrilled about being awake, he tells Izzie that the only new thing is now he has to pee and then die.

Bailey takes a coffee break where she finds Callie doing some paperwork. She tells Callie that she's got Alex and his new intern, Norman, working in the clinic for the day. Callie blows it off telling Bailey that it's fine. Callie briefly spots George walking passed the break room and then goes back into her depression. Bailey isn't sure what to think about it and doesn't say anything more. Also on break is Sloane and Derek. Sloane tries to have an intelligent conversation about new medical technologies and whatnot, but Derek is too simple-minded, instead he just yaps about Meredith. He seems to think that Meredith will grow up from their current situation and want a relationship again, though he denies that to Sloane.

Back to really old guy, he's calling out for the "blondie." Finally once Izzie gets to him he tells her that he wants Lobster. He tells her that a man can only hold on for so long, after a while it's just not worth it. She asks if he has friends, but he tells her that they're all dead. He then tells Izzie that George isn't going to leave his wife. She insists that he will, but the really old guy tells her that is what they all say. He makes a good point which seems to maybe sink in a little with Izzie. She goes to George to vent about really old guy and to get an answer. Is he going to tell Callie tonight? He tells her he has a lot of research to do, in other words no. Izzie is furious.

Izzie returns to the really old guy's room and finds he and a doctor are struggling. The really old guy is trying to pull all the wires and tubes off. Izzie tries to stop him at first, but gives up and rips off a wire herself telling the guy, "you're still with us." As she grabs another cord, which happens to be for the lamp, the other doctor alerts Izzie that the guy isn't breathing. Izzie goes into a panic telling the doctor, "I didn't do anything." After doing the paddles they are able to bring the guy back, but he's not thankful. He tells Izzie to quit saving his life.

Meredith makes it down to the ER to fill in for Cristina. Lexie is there filling out some paperwork about a splinter she just pulled out of someone's foot. Exciting stuff! Just then medics bring in a patient who I believe was in a car accident and didn't have his seatbelt on. Meredith calls over Lexie to help with the patient and has her do a procedure that makes Lexie nervous. The patient dies, leaving Lexie feeling like a failure and she blames Meredith. She says Meredith should've worked on the patient and done everything she could to save his life. Meredith tells her that the patient was dead at the scene, dead when they brought him to the hospital, they only brought him because it's required by law. She tells Lexie that she is there to teach her, if she doesn't want to learn from her then just go work in the clinic. Lexie says fine and goes to the clinic.

Once at the clinic Lexie whines to Bailey that Meredith kicked her out. But, when Bailey tries to send Lexie back to work with Meredith she begs Bailey not to do that. She tells Bailey that she can't stand to work with Meredith, she can't stand the sight of her. Bailey gives in and lets her work in the clinic. Rather than arguing any more with Lexie, Bailey takes the fight to Callie, who is still doing paperwork. Bailey asks if she's ever going to emerge from the room to do her job. Callie tells her no, she doesn't have any more fight in her, she doesn't want to fight so she's just doing to paperwork for the day. Bailey solves things on her own by confronting Meredith and telling her that it is her job to teach Lexie to be a better doctor whether she likes it or not.

The teenager with the screwed up speech ends up collapsing and his brain starts herniating. Alex has to act quick to save the kids life. He needs Derek, but Derek is still in surgery with the tongue cancer patient. So, Derek tells him exactly what to do. I'm somewhat unsure of exactly what Alex does, but I will tell you that it is the worst thing I think I have ever seen. He has to shove a tool inside the kids eye socket, above the eyeball. For what reason I am unsure. After the procedure the kid is doing better thankfully. Alex apologizes to Norman for yelling at him amidst all the chaos, but Bailey tells Alex not to apologize. Norman is an intern - even if he is old - he needs to learn just like all the other interns, that's what he's there for.

We return to really old guy's room. He has miraculously recovered and is ready to go home, sitting in a wheelchair looking out his window. Izzie tells him that he can't leave, she needs him. She's realized that George isn't going to tell Callie, even though George just told her that he would but it has to be the right time. As Izzie is telling really old guy this she walks toward him and discovers that he is dead. Stunned, she just sits on his bed in disbelief. After really old guy has been taken out of the room Izzie calls in George, Meredith, Cristina, and Alex to say their goodbyes - in front of the now empty bed. The other really don't have much to say, but Izzie says really old guy taught her to have hope - even though he didn't have any - because if you work hard enough at something it will happen.

Tongue cancer lady is doing very well after surgery. Though she's obviously not speaking yet the doctors believe she will. Her friends bring her flowers and balloons and then they tell her what they've been holding in. Her first husband touches their asses, the second one would spit when he talked, and the guy she dated last year "comb over guy" looked like a troll.

Meredith makes things better with Lexie in the end. She sits down with her and goes over exactly what happened the day her mother died. She tells Lexie that she was very fond of her mother and ensures her they did everything they could for her, but she was part of the 1% that basically had everything go wrong that could.

As the day comes to a close Alex and the interns, including George, are heading down. One of the interns turns to George and is in awe that he worked on the tongue cancer case. Alex puts the interns in their place by telling them that George is a repeat intern, that he did everything last year and that is how he knows more than them. He tells them that if they want to learn to follow a resident, not another intern. George stands there and takes the beating and just tells them that Alex is right, if they want to do right not to do what he does. Norman is about to give Alex his piece of mind on the subject, but Alex just looks at him and asks what the hell he's looking at. Then Alex looks at Lexie and says "interns" - as if she's not one, she just looks away.

Bailey tells Callie that she can see that she is struggling and offers that they work as a team to make things work, Callie happily agrees. The show ends with Callie sitting at home waiting for George to walk in the door. Once he gets home she tells him to just say it. So, he does. He tells her that he slept with Izzie.

And, that my friends is the end. Next week is going to be a must-see. I can't wait to see how Callie reacts. Do you guys think they'll work things out or will George and Izzie finally get to be together?
