Grey's Anatomy: Lay Your Hands On Me (Episode 72)

Grey's Anatomy is back!! At least we got one more episode before the writer's strike sent Grey's away. I'm watching the episode for the first time as I type this so I'll waste no more time getting to the details. Here we go...

We begin with Miranda talking about everything "God" supposedly created; the birds, the bees, the plants, so on and so on, and then he created man, and she says it's been downhill ever since. Sticking with this earthy theme we pan to Derek and Sloane walking through a forest until they come upon a cliff with a beautiful view. Derek asks Sloan what he thinks, so Sloane who is oblivious to pretty much everything around him asks what Derek means. Derek tells him it's where he's going to build his home. Finally, he'll be moving out of that trailer. How many years has he been living in that thing anyway? Back in Seattle, Derek is now watching Meredith make breakfast -- for Lexi. They're having a conversation about the house when Derek drops the bomb and mentions that it's not just his house, it will be her house too. The news startles Meredith and she splatters an egg on the floor. Anyway, the breakfast obviously doesn't smell so good because everyone is waking up wondering what the nasty smell is. Once Lexi makes it downstairs Meredith tells her that she made breakfast for her which is a happy surprise to her, well until she takes a bite. She mixed avocados into the eggs and that apparently is not such a good combo, though I can't speak from experience. Miranda and her husband still have not sorted their problems out and yet again Miranda runs out the door rather than just facing the problems head on.

Derek begins his morning informing Rose that he can't move forward with what seemed like a budding romance between the two because he's already involved with Meredith and he has to see it through. Izzie starts her morning by letting Cristina know that she can have all the cardio he wants because she doesn't want it anymore. Cristina is thrilled thinking that she'll get to be with Hahn for the day, but instead Hahn chooses Alex to be with her for the day. Cristina tries to argue her case, but Hahn won't hear it. The big surprise of the morning comes when Callie runs into Mrs. O'Malley in the waiting room. George has seemingly forgotten to tell his family that he and Callie are no longer together. Mrs. O'Malley must also be under the impression that George and Callie are going to have a baby because she pulls out a yellow sweater she made for a baby. Callie doesn't have a clue what to say at this point. Miranda's husband calls, but before she can find out what he wants she has to run to check on a patient whose alarm has gone off. When she gets to the room another patient - the woman that Hahn and Alex were supposed to be working on - is in the room standing over a male patient with her finger on his chest and her hand above him. Just then his alarm stops going off and Miranda asks what she did. The woman tells her that she's a healer and then faints, fortunately Cristina had been walking by and catches the woman. Later once the woman is back in bed Miranda tries to get more information out of her about this healing bit, but Hahn doesn't care she just wants to get the woman into cardio surgery. The woman tells Hahn she wants to exhaust all other options before having to go into surgery.

The second surprise of the morning comes from Lexi. She is covered in a nasty rash because it turns out that she is allergic to eggs. She knew this all along, but didn't want to reject the breakfast that Meredith had made for her. She's not frantically searching for meds which George helps her find. After Geroge finishes helping Lexi, Callie confronts him with the news of his mom being there and her making baby clothes because he never told her that they had split. Derek talks to Meredith about the dream house once again. She tells him they're about 100 steps between now and her being ready for that dream house. She tries to make it sound better saying that they'll be fun steps and they'll get to go through it all together. Back to Miranda who is explaining what happened with the miracle healer to the Chief. He is none to pleased about the ordeal and doesn't want everyone in the hospital thinking they've got some miracle healer. As he and Miranda are talking her cell phone is ringing off the hook but she refuses to answer. We can assume it is her husband who was trying to tell her something important earlier but she blew him off. Mrs. O'Malley is still lingering around the hospital waiting to talk to George when Izzie spots her. They share a hug and then Mrs. O'Malley tells her that she spoke to Callie, so Izzie assumes Mrs. O'Malley is aware of everything that's been happening over the past several months. Izzie goes on and on about how it only happened once because they were drunk and she never meant to break up George and Callie's marriage and about George failing the exams, etc. and of course Mrs. O'Malley knows none of this. Izzie soon realizes that and knows she just stuck her foot in her mouth. Thankfully George comes up seconds later and gets to deal with the aftermath. George's mom is very upset and crying at this point. She tells George that they are Catholic and they don't believe in divorce. He and Callie just need to go get marriage counseling, but George tells her that it is too late for that. He then gets a page and has to run.

The third surprise of the day comes when Miranda calls Tucker back and as she's reminding him to please only call her when there is an emergency she walks into the ER and spots her son being wheeled on a stretcher with paramedics and Tucker by his side. Tucker looks at Miranda who is in shock and tells her that there was an accident. It turns out that the boy pulled a bookshelf over on top of him. Miranda, Derek, Callie and the Chief immediately get to work on the screaming little boy. The whole time Tucker is trying to explain what happened, but Miranda tells him she doesn't want to hear it and that it is clear that he wasn't watching the boy or this wouldn't have happened. Meredith, Izzie, Alex, and Cristina are all watching as they check out the little boy, and George comes running in after talking to his mom. The Chief sends them on different assignments for the boy, Meredith is assigned to help Miranda from losing it.

The miracle healer woman is back in bed yet again after earlier getting out of bed to help another patient. She now has her own group of healers around her trying to help her so she can avoid having surgery. Back to Miranda's son, Miranda and Tucker are waiting as he has a CT scan. Miranda asks how it happened again and he accuses her of leaving the gate open and the boy went into the library looking for Miranda and that's why he's in the hospital now ... because of Miranda being at work, at least that's Tucker's insinuation. Miranda is disgusted, as am I, and tells Tucker, "you picked a bad wife, she made a bad mother, she made you stay home and raise your son, and she almost killed him. Poor you, huh?" Rose gets word of Miranda's son and asks Derek how he is, but Derek won't even make eye contact with her now. She forces him to make eye contact and they shake hands on being friends. The scans of the little boy are in and the diagnosis is not good. His stomach and many other organs have been pushed up into his chest so much so that you can't even see his heart in the scans. The complications from all this could be fatal and Miranda is on the brink of losing it completely. After they rush the boy into surgery Miranda interupts Hahn and the Chief in surgery because she wants to be with her son, but they refuse to do surgery in front of her because she is freaking out. She says she just wants to hold his hand, so Cristina agrees to hold his hand for her. This calms Miranda slightly and she agrees to leave the room. Later, Cristina finally shows some compassion and personal connection toward a patient for the first time. Sure it's Miranda's son so of course she's going to be personally connected, but earlier in the day Izzie called Cristina a robot because Cristina tried to say that they should treat the boy just like any other patient. While Cristina was holding the boys hand in surgery she was telling him that things would be ok. Hahn noticed this change with Cristina and even offered for her to do the finishing touches of the surgery. Cristina declined so that she could continue to hold his hand as she told Miranda she would do. It's good to see Cristina might be coming around, even if it is just in the smallest of ways.

Mrs. O'Malley is still at the hospital and talking to Callie again. Callie tells her that she used to believe in God and heaven and hell, but now she doesn't so much, instead she believes in love and second chances. She tells Mrs. O'Malley that she loved being an O'Malley and starts to tear up. You can tell she still isn't over George, as much as she may try to pretend she is. The ironic thing is that while George and Callie were together I sort of wanted him and Izzie to be together, but now that they have split I want him and Callie to work things out. Anyway, onto the miracle healer; Alex wants to take the woman to prep for surgery, but the woman is still delaying things to give more time for her healer friends to bring good energy in. The woman then tries to tell Alex what she senses about him. She says he is a sweet boy, but not a good man and wonders what has happened to make him this way. He is a little disturbed by what she had to say, but instead of opening his mind to what more she has to say he tells her that her artery is shredding and if she doesn't get the surgery fast she is going to die.

Back to Miranda who is on the verge of a breakdown, actually it's fairly safe to say that is she in the middle of a breakdown. She is bawling while trying to go over the events of the morning to remember if she left that gate open. Derek tries to calm her down and tells her it's not important that things just happen, but she tells him that it is important and that things don't just happen, people make choices and decisions and priorities. She is literally having a meltdown now and Derek has to just wrap his arms around her and remind her that she and Tucker are good parents, people make mistakes.

After Izzie stuck her foot in her mouth with George's mom, it's only fitting that George would later stick his foot in his mouth, right? As he's talking to Meredith about Derek's dream house he casually mentions Derek's kiss with Rose, which George had heard about earlier in the day while eavesdropping on Rose and Derek. Meredith didn't know about the kiss and after finding out she storms off from George to go confront Derek. When she finds Derek she asks who Rose is and he tells her who she is and that they shared a kiss which he is sure she has already heard about. She is confused of how he could be kissing a nurse the day before and then suddenly he's ready to build a dream house with her the next day. He tells her that they were seeing other people the day before. She tells him that she can't trust him, and he tells her that she will never be able to trust him no matter what he does, and that is why he is ending things. He says he can't take the back and forth anymore, and she tells him she can't either and walks away.

The surgery on Miranda's son has ended and things went well. He still isn't out of the clear as there is a lot of fluid in the chest cavity, but things are looking up at least. Hahn explains the situation to Miranda and Tucker, but Miranda tells her she already knows what all this means and she doesn't have to explain it. Then the Chief and Tucker walk away leaving just Miranda and Hahn. Miranda tells Hahn that if what she did saves her boy then she'll thank her for it, but after that she would rather never see her face again. I'm not so sure I understand where the hostility is coming from. I realize Miranda wasn't happy that Hahn threatened to stop doing surgery if Miranda didn't leave the OR earlier, but I didn't think it deserved such hatred. Am I missing something? Continuing with the religious overtones of the episode, Tucker talks to Miranda later about how they've been putting off baptizing their son and how after this they just need to make time.

While monitoring Miranda's son's condition, Alex and Izzie chat about her problems with Cristina. She tells him that she's crippled with envy. She tells him that Cristina knows who she is, she has this unwavering faith in herself and her skill, and she wants that. He tells her that Cristina is a robot, Izzie says she doesn't want that part, she wants the faith part. Speaking of faith, Miranda is still wondering how the healing woman does what she does. All the patients whom the lady has come in contact with has been healed. Miranda tells the Chief that she believes in faith, but faith isn't medicine, but the Chief tells her faith can't hurt. Miranda takes the healing woman to see her son. The woman holds hands with Miranda and Tucker and asks that they hold hands too and focus all their love on the boy to surround him with good energy. All the docs watch on as they work to heal the boy. Callie and George share a glance, as do Sloane and Hahn, and Izzie and Cristina. Derek looks Meredith's way, but she just continues looking forward.

George talks to his mom who is still at the hospital after being there all day long. She is passing the time by knitting. She again tries to encourage George to get marriage counseling, but he tells her it would just hurt everyone more. He regrets not telling his mom things, but he didn't want to hurt her more. The conversation then turns to George's dad. His mom tells him that she misses him so much. She asks George to come back home so she can take care of him, but he tells her that he thinks it's about time he started taking care of himself, and he's fighting back tears.

Just as Miranda goes to tell the docs that it really doesn't help for them all to stand there staring Tucker runs and tells her that the boy is choking. Miranda runs and is thanking God because it means that the boy can breath on his own now and doesn't need a breathing tube. It looks like the surgery and healing and all that faith helped out as things are looking good for the little boy. As for the healing woman, Alex brings Izzie to her because Izzie is much more of an optimist than he is which is what the lady needs. Alex tells Izzie that Cristina's got nothing on her. When are these two going to start hooking up again anyway? Moving on to George, he asks Lexi if she has an apartment yet because he was thinking of getting one and well maybe she could be his roomie. Are these two going to hook up next?

As the episode is wrapping up Hahn and Sloane finally address the sexual tension that has been hinted at for most of the episode and pretty much the entire time she's been at Seattle Grace. She tells him that if they didn't work together they probably would hook up, but because they do work together they can't do that. Sloane still isn't giving up and wants to go to Joe's with her after work. Derek isn't giving up either, at least in terms of giving up on Rose. He asks her out to dinner and she accepts the invite. Miranda's son is going to be ok, but Miranda and Tucker not so much. Tucker left the hospital to pack his bags and will be staying in a hotel.

And, that my friends is the end of this Grey's Anatomy. I think it was a terrific episode because it really tied up so loose ends before the show went away for a while and they did a great job of keeping the show balanced so that whether you believe in God, or no matter what type of faith you may have, you could relate to the message of the episode. It's unclear when the show will return due to the writer's strike. I think it's about time these media companies give the writers what they want and deserve. Plus, I'm ready for all new shows to start. If you're not sure what to watch now that the best show on TV -- Grey's Anatomy -- has ended, I recommend tuning into the other shows that I recap with new episodes, October Road and One Tree Hill.
