Everybody Hates Chris: Everybody Hates The Ninth Grade Dance (Episode 20)

Chris doesn't see the point in attending the ninth grade dance, which promises to be nothing more than a room of people hating him while dancing. Narrator Chris thinks they could film it for a tv show called "Dancing With The Bigots" (ha!), though Greg is more helpful -- there aren't enough jocks to take all the girls, so there have to be girls left over to be their dates, right?

Drew: You went to an all-white school?
Julius: I went to an all-white world.

Since none of the girls in Chris's neighborhood will go with him, Chris ends up taking Greg's advice and asking Carrie, a girl from school who we have never seen before, and will probably never see again). Like Chris, she doesn't have many friends, though unlike Chris not because people don't like her but because she doesn't really like people. Girls at school are in an uproar -- doesn't she know he's black? Too late, as Chris and Carrie appear to get along like a cross on fire. But when the men at the barber shop voice their objection, Chris tells Carrie he won't be going to the dance after all. She's pretty pissed, and for good reason -- while Chris thought he was looking out for her, he was really looking out for himself. They run into each other at the dance, where they enjoy a spin on the floor -- Chris is Carrie's only option, as it's him or nobody. The day after, Chris is excited to continue his friendship with Carrie but alas, it's not to be. Carrie just wanted someone to take her to the dance, and now that it's over, he'll have to find another girl to bug. Too bad everybody at school still hates him!

Drew's favorite Uncle Ryan appears to hit up Julius for money to invest in a scheme that, unlike deep-fried bread and 31 flavors of milk, promises to be a success. Ryan needs money to open a car dealership, so Julius pitches in. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to go well with Rochelle's recent investment in Tonya's desire to take ballet. Tutus, tights, and warm-up bars cost money, as do cars won at auctions. Where's all this money coming from, and what will it yield? For Ryan, a realization that what's really profitable is buying wrecks for parts, and for Tonya that she wants to dance just as much as Rochelle wants her to.
