So You Think You Can Dance: Top 6 Perform (Episode 420)

In this week's penultimate episode, Katee and Joshua are reunited, and it feels so good. Cat makes her final argument in proving that she is the coolest reality show host on TV, and Hairspray director Adam Shankman is our guest judge. I think it's safe to say that Adam will not utter the word "street" once, for which we are all surely grateful.

We only have an hour tonight, so they get right to it with new pair Courtney and Mark, who are performing a Viennese waltz by Aussie Jason Gilkison from the Down Under version of the show. In the rehearsal footage, Mark keeps touching Courtney's boob, much to her chagrin. Court, I don't think Mark's particularly interested in any part of your anatomy, so don't fret. On stage, they glide and twirl very nicely, and I think it's certainly one of the best waltzes we've seen thus far.

Adam enthusiastically (I believe that's his default setting, which is one reason I like him; another being that he gave me the joy of Zac Efron and Nikki Blonsky together) praises them and says America has a tough choice ahead. He criticizes the last lift a bit, but thinks Mark has the best "rise and fall" of any guy waltzing this season. Mark appears very pleasantly surprised, as I'm sure he was expecting to be crucified after favourite son Will was sent packing last week. Mary screams about how great the dance and choreography was, and Nigel also praises Mark and Courtney. Since they danced to David Cook's "The Time of My Life," Nigel also gives a shout-out to that other little show he produces. I suspect you might have heard of it. Something about an idol? I'm not sure.

Courtney and Mark's second number is jazz by Sonya Tayeh, she of the Mohawk hairstyle. I frankly don't really see how this is jazz and not contemporary, but whatever. It's a strange little number about a warring couple. Seriously, I think we need a moratorium on that concept, because it's been done into the ground this year. This routine is quirky and herky jerky, and Mark and Courtney look as if they are extras from a futuristic dystopian teenage society. It's certainly unique, and they dance it well, but I'm not sure it'll connect with the home audience. It didn't rock my world. Adam raves about the dancing and Sonya. Mary agrees, as does Nigel, who says it was a highlight of tonight's show.

Clearly, the sorting hat feels Katee and Joshua are both Gryffindors and has reunited them. Sound the trumpets! They've been my fave team since day one, and back together they are magical once more. In rehearsal, we see that they are happy to be working together again. Their first number is a contemporary by Tyce DiOrio set to Celine Dion's "All By Myself." There has been a lot of Celine this year. I suspect I'll hear even more on the upcoming Canadian edition of SYTYCD, so I should just get used to it.

The romantic dance is absolutely lovely, and I immediately rewind it to watch again before moving on. At one point, Katee bends down and Josh leaps over her in a single bound that seems to float on air. At this point, I would believe Josh is also faster than a speeding bullet. In a gorgeous lift, Katee runs and leaps, her legs in a split, and lands on Josh's outstretched arms. Nice!

The judges agree, although they spend more time talking about choreographers than Katee and Josh. First, Adam praises Tyce, which is fair enough, but then he rambles on about how he met Tyce when they were both dancing at the 1990 Oscars and being choreographed by Paula Abdul. She's forever their girl! She's also in the audience, appearing more lucid than she has in quite some time. I'm sure it won't last.

Adam remembers that he should talk about Katee and Josh, and he praises them lavishly. Mary screams a lot and says it was the most beautiful routine she's ever seen on the show. The hyperbole seems to be out in full force as the season winds down. (I've never heard this kind of hyperbole in my entire life! Never in the history of the world has there been such hyperbole!) Nigel also loved the dance, and then points out Cats and Phantom of the Opera choreographer Gillian Lynne in the audience. Yes, yes, lots of great choreographers in the house.

Katee and Josh's second dance is a Jason Gilkison paso doble. It's finally Josh's turn to doff his shirt in the grand tradition of Will and Twitch, and he looks very hot in tight black pants. He struts his stuff fantastically, and Katee does a great job as his foil. Their footwork is tight, and they stomp and swish around the stage as strobe lights give seizures to any epileptics in the audience.

Adam marvels at Josh's hip-hop background, and Mary says that Katee and Josh together are "true magic." The sorting hat murmurs its agreement from Dumbledore's Cat's office. Mary also screams, in case there was any doubt. Nigel thinks the dance was fabulous, and weirdly tells us it breaks his heart to say that Josh could steal the show. Josh is like, Thank you?

Obviously, our last pair is Chelsie and Twitch. First up is a mambo by Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin. In rehearsal, we see that Twitch's baggy pants are a hindrance, so he's forced to pull the waistband up to his ribcage. That's what you get for wearing ugly clothes, my friend. On stage, Twitch is outfitted in a smokin' hot white shirt/tight black satin pants ensemble. See how good your bod looks in that? Why people insist on hiding their lights under baggy bushels is beyond me.

Chelsie, in half of a red fluffy dress, spins and sashays and moves her hips as wonderfully as we've come to expect as pieces of her costume go flying. Twitch gamely keeps up with her, and it's a very enjoyable dance. Adam praises Chelsie and the routine, saying Twitch could have sold it a bit more, but did very well. Mary mentions how hard the timing of the mambo is, and thinks Twitch did a very respectable job and that Chelsie was dynamite. Nigel adds to the Chelsie love and also tells Twitch that he did well, although he shouldn't let mistakes register on his face. Fair enough. We see the slo-mo replay of the mistake in question, which I didn't notice in real time.

Chelsie and Twitch's final routine is hip-hop by Tabitha and Napoleon. Set to an orchestrated version of "Control," Chelsie and Twitch play duelling conductors fighting over a baton. They dance and act it well, both with terrific facial expressions and commitment to the routine. The routine itself isn't my favourite Tab/Nap, but it's fun as they interlock their limbs and try to wrest the baton from each other. Nothing really wows me, but there are some cute moments.

Adam gives Tab/Nap their obligatory praise, and then lavishes Chelsie with kudos. Mary gives Twitch his props and says Chelsie did a great job keeping up with him. Nigel also loved it, saying that it was very entertaining.

As for the solos, Chelsie is first out of the gate, gyrating her hips as she move across the stage. She ends with a drop into the splits, which is nice.

Twitch pops to a song about the Midas Touch, and puts on fake gold glasses and gold teeth, the latter of which is apparently called a "grill." After the fun solo, Cat then get up in Twitch's grill by putting it in her own mouth, "spit and all," as she puts it. With the grill and glasses on, Cat makes a gangsta pose. I rest my case: Cat is the awesomest reality show host of them all.

Katee's solo is less emo this week, as she smiles and springs around the stage to Maroon 5. Her solos still never wow me, but in routines, she's brilliant.

Josh does a break-dance number that includes a very impressive Russian split jump that soars up impossibly high.

Courtney spins and expressively dances around the stage, and it's very nice.

Mark struts around the stage, jutting his head back and forth and taking his tank top off because he wants to be shirtless, too, dammit.

Well, here we are. My top two are definitely still Katee and Josh. After that, it's a bit murky for me. I give Chelsie the edge over Courtney on dance skills, but Courtney gets the personality nod. Twitch and Mark are quite evenly matched, and it's really a coin toss for me as to which one I like more. I like them both! I like them all! Well, it's in America's hands.

This was a hilarious recap!

This was a hilarious recap! Thanks for the laughs. From week 2 on, my hopes have been set for a Joshua and Katee final two. I have a slight preference for Joshua, but could definitely be happy if Katee took the title. Both are worthy contestants.

Thanks very much! Glad you

Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed it. I definitely think it should be Josh and Katee in the final two, and I think I'd give her the edge. Although, like you, I think they're both worthy.
