How I Met Your Mother: Best Burger in New York: Episode 402

What Is Your Underpants Radius????What Is Your Underpants Radius????

Ted starts off telling his kids how smelly, rundown and dingy NYC was when he first moved there.  But then suddenly, things started to change around his neighborhood.  New businesses showing up like a coffee house or fast food restaurant.

Barney arrives at the apartment dressed head to toe in promotional gear for a new bank called Goliath National Bank.  Apparently, Barney's company just bought this bank.  He tells Marshall that the company is hiring in their legal department and we all know how desperate Marshall needs a job.

Funny how Barney is promoting a bank, especially with the Stock Market crashing yesterday and WAMU's troubles.

Lily sticks up for Marshall not having a job telling Barney that he is waiting for his environmental law position.

We then see a flash of Marshall and all the interviews he has been getting ready for lately.  With each interview his expectations become lower and lower.

The gang meets at the bar. Robin is starving and suggests that they eat at the bar because she just finished a cleanse and is starving.  The group all can't agree where to eat but finally agree to stay at the bar and order their new burger.

The burgers arrive, well all except for Robin's.  She tells everyone that they can start eating without her.  Barney, Ted and Lily make love noises as they eat their burger. Meanwhile, Marshall just says that the burger is OK.

Marshall explains that when you've had the best burger in New York everything else tastes like his grandpa's feet.  I'm sorry but Fat Burger in the best burger but I would never call In and Out my grandpa's feet.

Marshall begins to tell the story of when he first moved to NYC.  He was scared to leave his apartment for fear of being mugged.  Finally Ted forced Marshall to go for a walk. When Marshall started roaming around New York he discovered that it wasn't scary at all.  And just when he started to get hungry, Marshall discovered a burger place with a green door and neon red sign that said "burger."

When Marshall sat down he noticed pictures of all the celebrities that had eaten there, even Regis Philbin had eaten there.

Marshall rushed home to tell Ted of this place. The two ran out in hopes of finding the place again but never did. Instead they spend the next three hours trying to find their way back to the apartment.

Marshall tried burger place after burger place in hopes to find his rare gem again.  In every restaurant Regis Philbin's picture is hanging. Guess Regis gets around in NYC :)

One day, Barney arrives at Ted's and Marshall only to tell them that Regis Philbin works out at his gym now. The three rush off to the gym to find out the name of the restaurant.  Of course Regis can't remember the name but does remember all the dreams he's had about this burger.  It's been bugging Regis all these years too.  Regis gives Barney his cell number and tells the crew to call if they ever find out the name of the burger place.

As Marshall is telling the story Robin suddenly realizes she walks by the green door and neon red sign everyday.  Robin's burger finally arrives but Marshall tells them they all have to go right now to find the burger place. Poor Robin, she does need to eat a cheeseburger. Girl is WAY too thin.

Barney doesn't really want to talk to Regis so he texts him that they found the burger place. Barney also continues to promote Goliath National Bank.  Regis is in the middle of hosting a game show when he receives Barney's text and rushes out right in the middle of it.

Everyone's burger arrives again except for Robin's. We hear the love noises again from the crew. Marshall yells out that this isn't the place.

By this time everyone is kind of getting sick of Marshall. Ted says maybe it's possible that this burger can't live up to Marshall's expectations now.  Robin says that it's only a burger, which I might add she still hasn't had a chance to taste.  Marshall goes on and on about this burger and why it isn't "just a burger."

Marshall freaks out and leaves the restaurant, in search of this burger place.  The crew realizes that this is more than Marshall just needing to find the burger place.  What Marshall really needs is to find a job.  Hey maybe this so called burger place is hiring :)

Lily tells the crew about Marshall and his underpants.  She came home from work the other day to find out that Marshall had been walking around in his boxers all day.  That was OK until Marshall started answering the door in them and walking down the hall to get the mail in them.  Marshall's underpants radius reached all the way to the last restaurant Lily and Marshall dined at.  Barney starts singing the Goliath song in hopes of cheering everyone up.

Robin's food finally arrives but before the waitress can set it down Lily confronts her about the cook.  The waitress explains that this place was modeled after another place uptown. The crew runs out leaving Robin once again without a burger in her stomach.

As the group head uptown Regis calls Barney on his cell.  Barney tells Regis to meet them uptown. Regis throws a fit but agrees to meet them.

They arrive at the restaurant only to find out that it has been replaced with none other than a Goliath ATM.

Lily freaks out and blames Barney for all of this.  She starts yelling how much the bank sucks.  Marshall stops her to explain that he took a job offer from the bank.  Well now we know why Barney kept talking about this stupid bank. He was doing so to talk up the new job that Marshall got.

Marshall tells Lily that he needed a job and this gives him a reason to put on pants everyday.

Robin starts eating out of the trash. Can't really blame the girl......

Marshall tells the crew that he just wanted to have the same feeling he had again when he first moved to the city and had that first bite of that burger. His whole life was in front of him, but now it's time to be a grownup. Ain't that the truth.....

Someone standing nearby hears the whole conversation and admits that they know where the burger place moved to for $100.  None of the crew has cash and end up having to use the ATM. How ironic......

They finally find the place and it's everything that Marshall remembers and more. Regis also meets up with them and pretends that it isn't the place but he's just kidding!!!!!!

I seriously hope this season of HIMYM starts getting better. I'm just not clicking with the characters anymore.  Are the writers just running out of material????

HIMYM Recap of Burger episode

The part where Marshall is going on and on about the wonders of his best burger is actually a parody based on the movie Amadeus. An unsuspecting priest asks Salieri about Mozart's music, which prompts Salieri do go into a monologue about how one simple musical note, layered on another weaves an incredible tapestry, etc etc. They even have similar music playing in the background and Marshall is making some of the same gestures and expressions of Salieri. A totally unexpected place to see that, I wonder how many other geeks like myself actually noticed? Kudo's to the writers for that bit!

I got it though I must admit

I got it though I must admit they weren't too subtle about it. Still, good homage to a great movie. It's nice to see such a brilliant monologue becoming part of popular culture as well.

Rock on.

Thanks for the info. I've actually never seen the movie but I do appreciate when the writers are creative like that!
