Ugly Betty: Filing for the Enemy (Episode 216)

This week Betty is given a tough choice; go back to Mode to work for the devil-in-disguise, Wilhemina, or stick it out at Player magazine and get to work for BFF, Daniel. You would think this might be an easy decision but of course it's much more complicated than it seems. So, will Betty turn to the dark side for Wilhemina or stay the good girl with Daniel?

We begin at a Player photoshoot for a story called "America's Hottest Lawyers," with half naked women dressed as lawyers and judges. It's looking pretty hot! Betty is not happy at all and she's voicing her frustration with Daniel. She notices that between shots Daniel is looking at the Mode 'book' and is writing post-it notes and sticking them in the book. He tries to pretend like he doesn't really care about Mode but Betty knows different. Later, she takes the book to Alexis and tells her that this is proof that Daniel really does care about Mode and deserves to be the Editor-in-Chief, not Wilhemina. Alexis more or less blows her off because she is still maintaining her ignorance is bliss mentality.

Hilda and Tony are taking a walk along the Hudson. They couldn't do these types of shots before when they were shooting in L.A. - I definitely like that they are shooting the show on location in NYC now, it makes it all come to life. Back to Hilda and Tony though. As they're walking and talking we learn that Tony is married. MARRIED! Can you believe this crap? Hilda is way better than this. He tells her that she is the only woman though. How can that be if he's MARRIED? I thought she finally found a good guy, but clearly not.. she needs to get rid of this dirtbag.

Alexis takes Daniel's notes on the latest issue of Mode to Wilhemina. At first she doesn't tell Wilhemina that the notes are from Daniel but Wilhemina catches on to what's going on real quick. Wilhemina refuses to accept any of Daniel's notes saying that she knows what she's doing. The cover of this month's issue is so "artsy" you can't even tell who the woman is on the cover. It's a FASHION magazine! If you can't see who's on the cover or what they're wearing doesn't that sort of miss the point of it being a fashion magazine? Duh, Wilhemina! After Alexis leaves Wilhemina tells Marc that Daniel is going to be a problem.

Wilhemina takes Betty to lunch and is acting overly nice. Betty isn't buying this new, nice Wilhemina, she knows something is up. Wilhemina gets straight to the juicy stuff, she offers Betty a job at Mode to work directly under her. Betty tells her no and that she doesn't trust her. Wilhemina continues to play mindgames with Betty which just further leaves Betty confused of what to do. She wants to be back at Mode, but she hates Wilhemina. Betty goes home and discusses the offer with her family. She mentions that she feels like she's cheating on Daniel. The word "cheating" throws Hilda into a big rant about how cheating isn't bad if it just means you're exploring your options. Sure, whatever you say Hilda.

Wilhemina goes to Daniel and puts a bug in his ear that Betty went to lunch with her and may be working for her soon. Daniel plays it off like he already knew this but inside he's freaking out. He meets with Betty and goes off on her for not telling him. He says he's not happy, she shoots back that she's not happy either. She continues to try to get him to admit that he wants Mode back but he says he loves the new job at Player. After some more arguing he tells her to GO! Betty wastes no time and heads straight to Wilhemina to take her up on the offer. Wilhemina has her start right away and gives her a bunch of impossible tasks and she must get them done within a few hours. Betty gets right to work.

Daniel goes to the park to play ball with his son. He tells Jr they need to talk, he asks about his family in Europe and whether he misses them, Jr says he does and would like to visit them. Daniel feels bad, he wonders if Jr would rather be with them or with him, but he doesn't ask.

Betty goes to Christina for advice with the whole Wilhemina ordeal. Christina tells her that she thinks her husband is doing drugs again and is going to get a hair of his to do a drug test. Betty tells Christina she may end up quitting and she thinks that's what Wilhemina really wants. Christina begs her not to quit, she can't handle it at Mode without her. Betty says she'll try to get through it. Betty has to go though, she has plenty of work left to do. One of Wilhemina's demands is for Betty to get a treasured tiara. When she goes to request it she gets laughed at but later Betty befriends one of the women and ends up negotiating a deal to get the tiara for a one-page ad in Mode, which she already cleared with the ad sales department. Way to go Betty! When she goes back to Wilhemina, of course Marc and Amanda are there waiting to laugh at Betty thinking she'll never be able to pull off getting the tiara, but when she shows up with the tiara (security guards in tow) they are shocked. Wilhemina is delighted, but she makes Betty do one more task. She makes Betty inject her with Botox. Betty thinks a doctor should be there but she goes ahead anyway. Wilhemina tells her that she thinks Betty is her protege. The only other person to pull off getting the tiara, ever, was Wilhemina when Fey Summers demanded she get it. Later, Marc finds out that Wilhemina wants to groom Betty to be her protege and he throws a fit. Betty tries to calm him down asking him to help her plan Wilhemina's big celebration party for her first issue. Of course, this makes Marc happy that he's involved but he makes it clear to Betty that he's not working for her. He runs to Amanda later so she can baby him.

Tony shows up at the Mode offices to see Betty. Earlier Hilda asked Betty if Tony could get an autographed copy of the latest issue of Mode for a school fundraiser, so now he's there to pick it up. Amanda and Marc are drooling over Tony when Betty spots him. As she goes to get the issue for him Amanda continues to drool over Tony and somehow and for whatever reason she is able to snatch his phone. Betty comes back and gives Tony the issue which he loves and he leaves, not knowing his phone is missing. Amanda looks through pictures on the phone and asks Betty who the airline attendant is that he's with. Betty is confused and grabs the phone. She sees pics of Tony and another woman - his wife - together and knows she must take this to Hilda. Later, Betty breaks the news to Hilda and gives her the phone. Betty is expecting Hilda to be heartbroken but Hilda instead tells Betty the truth that she already knew. Betty asks Hilda what's wrong with her and tells her she needs to end it. Hilda asks why she can't just be happy for her and tells Betty that she's in love.

Daniel takes Jr to his first day of school. Every episode we seem to watch Daniel become a better and better dad. Before Jr goes into the school Daniel tries to give him some advice. He's not the best at offering advice but at least he tries and you can tell he genuinely cares and is looking out for Jr. Claire is there and after Jr goes into the school she tells Daniel he's a natural. Daniel expresses his concern that maybe Jr would rather be in France with his other family. Claire tells him to just ask Jr, she's sure he'll get the answer he's looking for.

Betty goes into party planning mode for Wilhemina's big bash. She doesn't have much time so it'll be a tall order to get it done. Marc is still jealous of Betty's new status and tries to make her feel guilty for leaving Daniel. Betty already feels guilty and Marc only makes it worse. As everyone around her is helping to get things ready Betty takes a seat and has an awful daydream of her becoming the next Wilhemina bossing people around. It freaks her out big time! Marc gives her a big bag of papers to shred, she tells him that she's busy and throws the bag at him, he says he's too busy as well and throws it back. Later, as she's shredding the papers, she notices they are all envelopes and letters, so she takes a minute and reads one. She realizes this huge bag of letters are all positive ones meant for Daniel when he was Editor-in-Chief of Mode. Apparently Wilhemina had someone keep all the positive letters to make it look like all they got were negative ones. Betty takes the letters to Daniel hoping this will convince him to come back to Mode. Daniel finally admits he wants Mode back but he says Wilhemina won. Betty tells him he needs to fight for it.

Christina secretly tests her husband for drugs and finds out he is indeed doing drugs again. She confronts him and he gets mad that she would do this behind his back and storms off.

Jr is back from school and playing Guitar Hero in Daniel's office. He tells Jr that they need to talk again. He asks Jr if he wants to go back to France to be with his other family. Jr tells him no, he wants to stay with Daniel. This couldn't make Daniel any happier. He says they'll fight for him to stay then.

Wilhemina's party is just starting and is already a big hit. Wilhemina compliments Betty on doing such a fine job. Betty gives her a letter and tells her that it's her two week notice. Betty says that she wants to be successful but not at the cost of hurting other people. Wilhemina tells her nice people don't win. Claire overhears what's going on and before Betty can leave she tells her to stick around because the party is about to get real interesting. Alexis goes to Wilhemina and tells her she's done at Mode, partly because of her hiding the letters and also because the sales for Wilhemina's first issue were the worst they've had in a long time. Alexis asks for everyone's attention and announces that Daniel will be coming back as Editor-in-Chief of Mode, which everyone in the room cheers for. Wilhemina tells Alexis, Daniel and Claire to remember that she owns 1/3 of the company. Claire tells her that the baby will own 1/3, not Wilhemina. Wilhemina says she'll never be able to push her aside, but Claire tells her to watch and shoves over a life-sized ice sculpture of Wilhemina. Claire tells Wilhemina not to ever threaten her children again because she'll do anything to protect them. Go Claire! Daniel ends up apologizing to Betty and she jokes that she thinks it's time for her to get a raise.

Hilda gets ready to go on a fancy date with Tony and is excited, but when she gets to the restaurant and he's not there she calls him and finds out that he's not coming. His wife didn't end up going out of town. Hilda is devastated.

The episode ends with a shocker. Christina is going home for the night and decides to take the stairs after the elevators take too long. As she's getting ready to walk down the stairs we see someone push her down the stairs and she's just laying at the bottom motionless. Is she dead? Who would do this?

Next episode the police are investigating what happened and everyone is a suspect, even Betty.
