Private Practice: Equal and Opposite (Episode 11)

Last week we got the shocker that Oceanside Wellness may be going under thanks to Naomi's secretive ways. She confided in Addison who then spilled the beans to Sam. Sam took control of the practice and now Naomi is pissed at both of them.

This week we begin the next morning from where we left off last episode. Addison and Sam keep calling Naomi trying to talk to her but she just keeps hanging up on them. Things aren't going well between Coop and Charlotte this morning either. Coop isn't too into the morning sex, and once again he brings up to Charlotte taking their relationship public. She refuses telling him, "we don't do public." What is she so afraid of?

At the office, Addison and Sam arrive to find out that everyone else is part of a secret meeting. Looks like it might be Naomi and the docs vs Sam and Addi. We see the new receptionist who is replacing Dell. Let's hope this is just temporary, although I have to say I wouldn't mind seeing her every week. The secret meeting ends and Naomi briefly greets Sam and Addi but is clearly not looking to be friends with either. Sam and Addi greet the other docs in the meeting room. Sam unveils a new chart that shows when each of the doctor's is busy and when they're not so that he can have them doing other things when they have downtime. The chart shows Pete has quite a bit of downtime but Pete says otherwise. Turns out he's bought a new lipo machine to try to drum up business. Violet is not happy at all about that and she says if this is the new direction of the practice she won't be sticking around. She goes to Coop's office and asks him to tell her what's been going on with him. He still refuses to open up to her, he tells her that they're not 12 years old, they don't have to tell each other everything. This only makes Violet more upset. Nothing seems to be going her way today.

Addi and Naomi have to work together on their first patients of the day. It's a young couple who seem to have everything in common except they can't seem to get pregnant after five years of marriage and they want to know why. Addison runs a test on the couple and discovers that there is a very obvious reason these two are having difficulties getting pregnant. It turns out they have almost identical dna, they are brother and sister! Yep, brother and sister married for five years. The slightly good thing is that they are not aware they are brother and sister, they grew up in different families and just had the same sperm donor father. This is going to be a tough case for Naomi and Addi not to discuss at great length.

Sam gets his first patient of the day and it's a 17 year old guy. Sam knows his father (who played a doctor on Everwood) who runs another business. As they're outside the room talking the son collapses. Sam finds him on the floor in respiratory distress. Later, after they have stablized the guy, he tells his dad and Sam that he wants to die. I'm not sure what his exact condition is but he's been going through horrible pain and lots of procedures for years and years. His dad refuses to let him die though. Sam isn't sure what to do about the situation, he feels bad for the guy who is just short of his 18th birthday and able to make his own life or death decision.

Addi and Naomi break the news to the young couple that they are in fact brother and sister. They seem a little surprised but not nearly as much as what you might expect. And, they quickly decide that they are still going to stay together as husband and wife. Addi and Naomi have to fill them in on the facts, if they stay together they can't have sex because there's too much risk she could eventually get pregnant and the baby will be 300x more at risk of all kinds of problems. They think maybe they can adopt, but Naomi and Addi tell them no adoption agency will let them do that. Finally, the girl decides she just wants her tubes tied then. Addi and Naomi are not happy about this decision and tell her to really think about that.

The receptionist informs Sam that yet another bill collector is on the phone for him. Things seem to be getting really bad, really fast. I wonder how they will turn things around. I'm not convinced that Pete's lipo machine will be the savior.

Around lunchtime Coop sends a txt message to Charlotte cancelling their lunch date. Charlotte shows up soon afterward and is in a huff. She's pissed that Coop would dare cancel on her, but she can't show too much emotion because the other docs are already curious as to why she's in the office and talking to Coop. After she leaves they ask Coop what that was about, he sort of mumbles until everyone goes away.

We find out the new receptionist is a real winner. She tells Sam he has a call, but he figures it's a bill collector since she didn't specify who it was and tells her to just take a message. After she hangs up she gives him the message and it turns out that it was actually his patient's father calling from the hospital. Sam rushes over to the hospital to meet with the father. The father is still insisting on keeping his son alive despite his son's plea to just let him die. Sam expresses that he may take the side of the son and let him die considering the 17 year old is basically old enough to make his own decisions. The father threatens Sam that if he does this he will pull all of his business from Oceanside, which I guess includes his company's employees going to Oceanside for check-ups and whatnot. Sam doesn't want this to happen and agrees to keep the guy alive.

The girl from the brother/sister couple visits Addi and again pleas with her to tie her tubes. She breaks down crying telling Addi that she's never had a special person in her life like the guy (brother) that she has now and she doesn't want to lose him. After the girl leaves Addi meets with Naomi to discuss the couple. Addi is actually leaning toward tying the girl's tubes now. Naomi is totally against it. This leads to a debate between all the docs over what to do. Coop is totally grossed out by it all and just enjoys making fun of the couple.

Violet again expresses her unhappiness about Pete's lipo machine. Pete tells her that she should give it a try before she disses it. It's not actually a lipo/fat sucking machine, it's more so of a massage wand to loosen the fat. Violet decides to give it a try afterall and actually ends up enjoying it.

Sam and Naomi finally discuss the money situation for a moment but really solve nothing. Naomi and Addi also discuss things and again nothing is solved, and it ends with Naomi tells Addi that things can't be undone.

Addi and Naomi have to work together again as their young couple is back. They're having a discussion and it comes out that the guy actually knew the girl was his sister before they got married, but he never told her. Why would he want to marry his sister though? Gross.

Coop discovers that he has lice! Despite him and Violet being in somewhat of a fight he has to ask her to help wash his hair and get rid of the lice. As she's doing the washing and lice combing he finally tells her that he's been dating Charlotte but that she didn't want them to go public about it. Violet really doesn't seem to be upset about it. I think she figured that this was happening, she just wanted Coop to finally tell her.

Addi takes a break by herself and decides to call Kevin -- the cop. She leaves a long voicemail message for him talking about all her problems. At the end she realizes this probably wasn't the smartest thing to do considering they barely know each other but she needs someone now that Naomi is shutting her off.

As the episode begins wrapping things up, the docs confront Sam and tell him they're not happy with all the changes -- like Coop having to make cold calls to possibly patients, Pete doing lipo-ish treatments, and so on. If this is how things are going to be then they'd rather just see the practice end. He says he needs them to have faith in him.

Sam finally gets the father to let his son go. The father takes the breathing tubes out his son's mouth and tells him goodbye, and his son dies. He is crying and Sam is clearly upset but they know it's better than to make him suffer when he clearly didn't want to.

Addison holds the elevator for Naomi on their way out, but Naomi declines the offer. Biotch! Pete and the new receptionist end up getting it on. After they're done having sex she tells him she never knew older men could be so good in bed.

Later that night at home Sam and Addi are standing on their balconies which are separated by just a few feet. They talk about the situation and how Naomi will hopefully come around. Just then we see Naomi is standing down below. Sam goes down and greets her, they talk for a minute and then go straight to dry humping each other. Naomi tells Sam this is just "hate sex" though. Whatever it is, it's hot!

That's all for this episode. The next new episode won't air for two weeks, unfortunately. That episode Addison has to do a surgery (it's looking more like Grey's, finally) and Violet is threatened by some teen punk with a baseball bat.
