The theme of this episode and the Mode issue is "Love & War," well at least it's Daniel's theme, Wilhemina wants the issue to be about puppies -- because puppies are definitely high fashion. Betty runs into Claire at the photo shoot and mentions that Daniel hasn't mentioned Jr since he left. This could be partly due to his battle with Wilhemina for Editor-in-Chief status. Wilhemina arrives at the shoot and she and Daniel have a big fight over who is Editor-in-Chief and which theme they should do.
After the shoot Betty tells Daniel that something needs to change. Leave it to Betty to state the obvious. When Betty gets back to the office she finds none other than Kimmy Keegan (played by Lindsay Lohan) sitting at her desk. Remember Kimmy was Betty's arch rival in school? Kimmy tells Betty that she really needs a job and is hoping Betty will help her get a job at Mode. Betty starts stuttering but manages to spit out the word "no," but just then Daniel comes up and tells Betty he was thinking about all the work she has and how she said things need to change and he thinks it'd be a good idea if she hired a temp. Kimmy gets excited and tells Daniel that she'd love to work at Mode. He hires her on the spot. Betty is overcome with excitement.
Betty goes to Christina to vent about Kimmy and how she's trying to ruin her life. She tells Christina about a story that happened in school -- Betty asked Kimmy if she could sit at her table, Kimmy said yes but then asked if Betty could get her a water, Betty said sure and went to get the water but it was up high so she had to get a chair to reach it, just as Betty was reaching for the water Kimmy came up and pulled Betty's skirt down exposing her 'granny pants.' Everyone in the cafeteria laughed and threw things at her and she was known for the rest of her time in school as 'granny pants.' Christina advises Betty to let Kimmy be the one who gets harrassed since she's the new one now.
Justin is auditioning for Broadway and is being extra flambouyant this episode because he's so excited about it. Of course, there has to be a bully at school to knock him off his high. Justin is pretty good at keeping his head held high though.
Betty takes Christina's advice and lets Kimmy take the brunt of Marc and Wilhemina's wrath when Kimmy tries to get receipts from Wilhemina. Being the good person that Betty is you can tell she feels bad. And, later at home, Betty discusses what all happened with the fam and her dad suggests that she let the past be the past and try to move on and be the better person, even though it wasn't long ago that Kimmy was being a total bitch to him at the fast food joint. Hilda agrees with Christina and thinks Betty should just let Kimmy be eaten by the sharks at Mode.
The next day, Amanda and Marc mock Kimmy for a little backpack she always wears. Kimmy thinks they're complimenting her though and thanks them. Sitting in on her first staff meeting Kimmy royally messes up dumping food everywhere and knocking over a cardboard cutout of the next cover of Mode. Betty sends her to go get water for everyone. While Kimmy's gone everyone, including Daniel, thinks Kimmy needs to go but Betty actually stands up for her and tells them she'll turn her into the best assistant. Just then Kimmy comes back with the waters but doesn't realize there is a glass door and runs right into it... just like Betty did her first day. That was HILARIOUS!
Claire and Daniel have lunch, well cereal for Claire and nothing for Daniel, so is it really lunch? Anyway, she guilts him into talking to her about Jr. He finally admits that he's really missing him and wants to start a family. He just doesn't know how to do that since all the women he meets aren't exactly life partners.
Betty is on a mission to turn Kimmy into the perfect assistant, like herself. She creates a synonym "ARG" so Kimmy can learn easier. It stands for anticipate, research, and gumption. She goes on to teach Kimmy all the in's and out's of getting people to do what you want, like mentioning available passes to a Colin Farrell movie premiere in front of Marc in order to get Wilhemina's receipts. You have to scratch each other's backs to get what you want. Later, Kimmy shows she's catching on quick by getting Daniel into a popular salon that has been booked for months, and also getting her and Betty into the hottest clubs tonight. Betty is super excited to get to go clubbing with Kimmy tonight. She runs to Daniel's office and has to share the good news with him. He wants her to proofread an 'about me' he submitting to a dating service. Yep, Daniel Meade is joining a dating service!
Kimmy takes a cookie to Amanda to try to make friends with her. Amanda tells Kimmy she can really show her the ropes around Mode and takes her to "the closet." After Kimmy's visit to "the closet" she returns looking HOTTT! She mentions to Betty that Marc and Amanda are going to go clubbing too. Betty is not happy.
Betty, Kimmy, Amanda and Marc take a cab to the club. Amanda, Marc and Kimmy are in the back of the cab having a blast while Betty has to sit up front with the driver and can't hear what all the laughing and excitement is about behind the plexiglass divider. She keeps asking what is so funny but Kimmy blows her off telling her it's too hard to explain. The driver points out the obvious to Betty, she's not part of their group. She says she is but it's clear she's really not. Once they arrive at the club, A+M+K jump out and run to the door, Betty is stuck paying for the cab. Finally Betty reaches the door and they find out that it's just Kimmy +2 on the guestlist, not +3, so Kimmy suggests that Betty stay outside and they'll go check to see if the club is any good. Betty stands out there for 45 minutes and then decides to give up and calls a cab. Just as the cab is getting there Kimmy comes outside. Betty asks why she acts like her friend one minute and then blows her off the next. Kimmy says she really is her friend and that she just did that so they could blow off Marc and Amanda and go to the other clubs. Betty hopes Kimmy is being genuine and then two head off to the other clubs.
Ignacio and Hilda take Justin to his Broadway tryouts. At the registration he runs into the bully from school who just so happens to be there auditioning as well. The kid is a football player but also apparently knows how to dance, or at least thinks he does. He says his mom is making him tryout otherwise he can't play football. Before auditioning Justin and the bully have a dance off, neither of them are very impressive.. though they think so. They end up not getting picked. Surprise! Justin tries to talk to the bully later and the bully blows him off. It looks like their friendship is over before it even began.
Daniel goes on his dating service date. It's a cruise around the harbor with a date and the date just so happens to be... Wilhemina! She is also part of the dating service and looking for a man because she doesn't want to screw up the new kid like she did her daughter. She seems to think that somehow by having a man that it will fix her personality. I don't think so! Anyway, they are both surprised that each other would be part of a dating service. They're forced to have dinner and drink some wine together as the boat sets out to cruise around the harbor. About half way they decide they can't take it and work together to set off a fire alarm. After they get back to land Daniel walks Wilhemina back to her place, or at least the place she's staying for the night. She says she called a buddy because although she has long-term wants, she also has short-term needs. Daniel apparently either has given up his short-term needs or has run out of hotties to hook up with because he goes home alone. The big surprise of the night though is that Daniel and Wilhemina are actually getting along. How long will this last?
The next morning, Daniel calls Betty at 10am when she still isn't in the office. She is hungover from the all-night clubbing with Kimmy. Although Kimmy managed to make it into the office and is doing Betty's work. When Betty arrives she is not happy to find Kimmy trying to take her place. Kimmy says she sent Betty a text message, but Betty never received it which makes her think Kimmy is lying. At lunch, Kimmy pulls out her and Betty's school yearbook and shows Amanda and Marc. A+M make fun of Betty for her poofy hair-do. Kimmy asks Betty if she'll get her a water, Betty agrees, but then notices the water is up high. She has a flashback to the incident in high school but continues to get the water for Kimmy anyway. Betty pulls up a chair and goes to reach for the water, just then Kimmy comes up from behind and tells Betty she has something on her skirt (just like in school), except this time Betty jumps off the chair and pulls Kimmy's skirt down instead. Kimmy stands there mortified, although she's wearing much more stylish undies than Betty was in school. Everyone sort of snickers but then it's Betty left standing there looking like the bad guy. She tries to tell everyone that Kimmy did that to her in school and everyone called her "granny pants" but the damage has been done and everyone seems to be on Kimmy's side. Kimmy tells Betty she thought they were friends and then walks away with Amanda and Marc. Betty just can't get a break!
The bully talks to Justin at school and they agree to hang out some time. It looks like maybe Justin will fit in afterall. Or, is the bully just setting him up like Kimmy has been setting Betty up? It makes you wonder.
Betty takes Daniel lunch with a big piece of chocolate cake on the side trying to suck up for being late this morning. He then points out how Kimmy got Mode mentioned in all the morning tabloids and how great that is. A lightbulb flashes in Betty's head. She suggests that Kimmy be the new "it" girl for Mode to get their name in the tabloids on a regular basis. It would be a perfect gig for Kimmy since she loves to be the center of attention and go clubbing. Daniel says he'll think about it. Later, at the staff meeting, Daniel announces that Kimmy has been promoted which makes Betty excited. But, then the punch comes in, it turns out Kimmy is being promoted to "Associate Editor" and everyone claps for her. Betty has a flashback to high school when everyone acted like that toward Kimmy. Kimmy stands there loving the attention, Betty on the other hand is furious.
After the meeting Betty talks to Daniel and he reassures Betty that it's just a title so that when the tabloids mentions Kimmy it sounds like she's important. Betty accepts this and tries to make the best of it. She congratulates Kimmy, but then Kimmy starts giving her orders to get her coffee and whatnot. Kimmy tells Betty that she's got her confidence back and now she's popular, and Betty's not, and popular people shouldn't be nice to unpopular people. She then struts off with A+M following.
Next week, it looks like A+M finally help Betty to take Kimmy down. With all the rumors flying around that Lindsay Lohan has been cut from the show it looks like next week will probably be her last appearance. I don't really understand why they cut her because her character was really good and I thought her acting skills were great! Maybe the real reason they're cutting her is because she didn't draw in the ratings they hoped and they don't want to keep paying her? Just a thought.
