It'a Karen McCluskey's 70th birthday, and Edie's very thoughtful husband Dave suggests they throw her a surprise party. If the surprise doesn't kill her, I'm pretty sure Dave might. He's a shady charecter. In the meantime, we learn what has happened to the housewives over the five years they have jumped ahead. I'll try and make this as un-confusing as possible.
For Carlos and Gaby, the past five years have been filled with one, "one in a million," miracle after the other. First, came Juanita. Since she thought she could never get pregnant after her miscarriage, Gaby slaps her OB-GYN who delivers the "good" news. Their second daughter came as yet another shock, and Gaby forced Carlos into getting a vasectomy. Flash forward to today, as they enter the party for Karen, Carlos lets Gaby know he never went through with the procedure. Seeing as how Gaby hasn't gotten her period yet, this is very unwelcome news.
In another house on Wisteria Lane, Jackson is asking Susan to move in together. Flash back to five years ago, when Susan was newly single and looking for a painter to change up her house. Enter Jackson. Months after he began painting for her, Susan comes home after signing her divorce papers. Jackson was there, and after some scotch, the two end up in bed together. After their little tryst, the two discuss keeping it simple, no relationship, yadda yadda yadda. Flash back to today, Jackson tells Susan he is in love with her. Not able to respond the way he would like, Jackson decides to make-out with Katherine to make Susan jealous. It worked. But being as hard headed as she is, Susan tells Jackson she doesn't want to think about the future, and he breaks up with her.
Another couple who has hit the rocks, Lynette and Tom, are remembering how their lives have dramatically changed over the past five years. Lynette flashes back to Tom's near-death experience at the pizzeria. Apparently he was electrocuted and his heart stopped. On his hospital bed, Tom makes Lynette promises him they will find more in life. It obvious Tom has entered a mid-life crises when he buys the red convertible he has wanted since he was a kid. Today, Tom wants to buy an RV and take the kids out of school for a year to travel the country. Lynette, horrified, asks him who is going to run their restaurant while they are off being their version of the Partridge Family? Before entering Karen's party, Tom tells Lynette he has found a buyer for the restaurant and he has accepted the offer. Wow, talk about a surprise party. Aren't the surprises usually kept for the birthday girl?
In what was not such a surprise, Bree started drinking all those years ago when her husband was sent to jail, and her son was taken away from her. She started drinking so much, that Katherine had to be the one to pull her out of the gutter. Katherine told her to throw herself into work, and everything would be OK. She would make sure of it. Not only did Katherine earn her partnership with Bree, she kept Bree's secret from the rest of the street, and her husband. None of which know Bree started drinking again. Flash forward to today, when Orson instructs Bree to tell Katherine he is now an equal partner in the company. Bree, knowing their past, can't do that to Katherine after all she has done for her. After telling Orson the truth, he agrees. He tells Katherine he will work his way up to partner. Katherine informs him he won't last two months working for Bree. And so it begins...
Not only is Karen getting a surprise party, but she has a surprise at home for her as well. Dave has re-arranged some of her furniture in an attempt to show her getting dementia. His plan worked flawlessly. Especially when Karen gets to the party and goes after Dave with a baseball bat. Thinking she is really losing her mind, they call an ambulance to take her to the hospital. Has Dave finally got rid of the women who can blow his new life apart? It seems this way. But Dave is definitely up to something terrible. Most likely involving Mike, but why, I'm not sure. Next week should gives us some insight. And it better. It's seeming more and more like season two (hint, hint).
