Grey's Anatomy: Life During War (Episode 83)

Before we begin the recap I must warn all of you that no animals were harmed during the filming of this episode. Yes, really, it's going to be one of THOSE episodes.

We start with Meredith and Derek sorting through boxes and Meredith comes across "anatomy Jane" doll that she used to play with all the time as a kid. It's a doll that lets you take out all the different body parts. Izzie and Alex wake up in the same bed and Alex's first question is whether they're still going to sleep with other people. Hahn and Callie also wake up in the same bed and both seem to have had quite a bit of fun the night before, though Hahn seems to have had a REALLY good time because she's absolutely raving, crying even. Seriously, she's crying. Callie seems to be a little creeped out, understandably.

The Chief introduces Derek and Sloane to the latest doc at Seattle Grace, who will go by Hunt (full name is Owen Hunt). You'll remember him from a few episodes back... aka G.I. Joe. Cristina spots Hunt and freaks out, she drags Meredith to a private area and tells her what happened between her and Hunt before.

Later, the Chief takes Bailey to the roof to talk to her. He says that he needs to her start taking control, he needs her to start being him. Just then he fills her in on a patient that's coming with a tumor wrapped around major arteries.

Izzie is not happy with Alex because he keeps talking about tapping other asses and Lexie won't talk to George because of what happened last episode. Bailey stops by the residents locker room and tells them that they will all be doing a skills lab today, except for one who will get to work with her on an inoperable tumor surgery. After Bailey spots Meredith with "Anatomy Jane" she chooses her to help with the tumor.

The rest of the residents will be doing skills lab with new doc, Hunt. They will be working on LIVE pigs, well sort of alive, they are drugged and then Hunt goes one-by-one and stabs each of the living pigs. Izzie is disgusted and refuses to continue with the lab.

Meredith introduces the girl with the tumor to "Anatomy Jane" and tries to explain to her what all is wrong and how they might fix it. The girl's entire extended family is there and they are putting the pressure on the docs. They have heard how good Hahn is and they want her. If she won't do the surgery then they will go elsewhere.

Back to the skills lab, Hunt acts like he doesn't even know who Cristina is. She's pissed and stands up to Hunt when he tries to take the easy route on one of the pigs, he gets back at her by calling her "Christine."

Meredith and Bailey do a dye test on the tumor girl and find out that the tumor is worse than they had thought. I guess "inoperable" is starting to sink in. Bailey pages Hahn and shows her the test results which show the tumor is wrapped around five arteries. Hahn doesn't want anything to do with the surgery so Bailey resorts to begging.

Callie is still creeped out by Hahn's crying session this morning. Really... Hahn crying? It's just not right. Callie pulls Sloane into the on-call room and they have sex. Callie is a bad girl!

Hunt gets a page in the skills lab and finds out that half a dozen patients will be coming to the ER. He has to rush to the ER and take all the residents with him, except he leaves Cristina in the lab to keep things under control along with her interns. She is pissed that she's stuck with the pigs and not getting to be in the ER.

In the ER, one guy has a wound to the head. Alex is going to take care of that guy. Derek and Sloane want to help Alex but Hunt tells them they have it taken care of. Izzie gets a trauma patient.

Back to the girl with the tumor, the Chief, Bailey, Hahn and Meredith sit around a table trying to figure out what they can do for the girl. They have to somehow take out the organs to deal with the tumor and then put them all back in without causing other problems. It's a nearly impossible surgery. Meredith ends up coming up a plan, thanks to Anatomy Jane, where they will take out all of the organs but get them back in. The plan isn't perfect but it's a starting point and they start throwing ideas on a board.

In the ER, Hunt tells Alex that he should just use whatever resources he has in the room. Obviously Hunt isn't too concerned about the guy or whether he's getting the best care he could get, as long as it's quick and decent.

The Chief, Bailey, Hahn and Meredith tell the tumor girl's family what they plan to do to get rid of the tumor. They want to do it but obviously everyone is concerned because of the serious risks. Before surgery Meredith and the Chief get in a small fight. The Chief has been having an attitude with her all day and she calls him out on it but then he turns the tables and says that she should be more concerned with the surgery than whether he's mad at her.

Surgery on the girl is going well but the family keeps interrupting the docs because they want updates. They are just the normal concerned family but the docs are on edge about the surgery and don't want to be bothered. After they remove the organs the Chief makes a quick visit to the family to update them. He gets a little crappy with the father, so the father gets crappy right back telling the Chief that it's never easy getting information from hospitals and doctors and he doesn't know if that's their ego's or what and he really doesn't care, he just wants to take care of his daughter. The Chief finally understands and tells the dad never to stop caring like that. Back in the surgery, the docs run into a problem with putting the organs back in and this leads to Bailey and Hahn getting into an argument. The Chief yells at them and Bailey comes up with a solution. Her solution works, thankfully, and they're able to complete the surgery successfully.

In the lab, the interns are starting to get connected to the pigs, even naming them. Cristina tells them that she doesn't want them to give them names, but just then one of the pigs starts to crash. Cristina and the interns have to rush to save the pig. They all work together and they end up saving the pig, which they have named Wilbur.

In the ER, Derek and Sloane catch wind that Alex did a quick glue job on the guy with the head wound and they're not happy at all. Izzie still isn't happy with Hunt and while they're working on her patient she tells Hunt that they could've just as easily have used a dummy to learn and not had to hurt innocent animals. She makes a point that animals have different genes and such than humans and it doesn't always benefit us to test things on them. She says we have the technology now that we don't have to torture animals. She makes a very good argument and all-knowing, macho Hunt is speechless. Katherine Heigl deserves an Emmy for this one, in my opinion.

Callie and Sloane hit the on-call room for a second sex session. Sloane says he's fine being a cheater but he asks Callie if she is. She tells him about Hahn crying and how it was creepy. He tells her that the crying thing will pass.

Derek and Sloane confront Hunt and bitch him out for almost screwing up a patient -- if they hadn't gone back in and fixed the guy -- because he wanted to take the quick and easy way out. Hunt asks them how he should've done different. He tries to act like he genuinely wants to know but really I think he's just being a smartass. I don't like this guy AT ALL.

After the surgery on the girl with the tumor, Bailey tells Hahn off. She says that the success of the surgery was no thanks to Hahn because she made the entire surgery difficult by questioning and bickering the whole entire time. Bailey says the surgery was successful thanks to herself, Chief, Meredith and even Anatomy Jane.

Cristina walks Hunt through the lab telling him how all the pigs are doing. They are all stabilized now, even Wilbur. He's tells them that they did great work, now they just need to terminate them all. Cristina doesn't understand and asks what he means. What he means is that they need to kill the pigs. She storms out, he follows. She says she won't kill them after getting them back to health. He says it would be torture to keep them alive and make them go through the months of recovery. She asks him whether he seriously didn't know who she was. He explains that a horrible incident happened to him and his men in Iraq, a lot of them were killed, and now he's living in the aftermath of this. How this explains why he would act like he doesn't know her, I have no idea. Cristina goes back to the lab with Lexie and together they inject the pigs with a drug to kill them.

Callie goes to Hahn and tells her that she slept with Sloane today, twice. Hahn says ok. At the endof the day Callie asks Sloane if he wants to get a drink because he means more to her than just someone to sleep with, they head to the bar together. It's not what it seems though, they're definitely just going as friends. I think Callie and Hahn will be getting serious.

Meredith goes to give the Chief an update on the girl. He tells her what his attitude was all about today. Apparently seeing Meredith with "anatomy Jane" again brought back some memories. He says every day she is a reminder to him of his past. He says that's not her fault and if saying sorry would mean anything to her he'd say it but he knows it won't.

Lexie cooks mac-n-cheese for dinner for George and tells her that sometimes she gets too emotional and she understands that she shouldn't at work, not with him. He says the food is really good but nothing more. Why can't he just admit he has feelings for her too? Why does he keep denying it? Alex goes to Izzie and asks her to help him because he doesn't know how to do the relationship thing. She realizes that he wants to be exclusive with her but he didn't know how to tell her that besides trying to make her jealous by talking of sleeping with other people. They start making out. Woohoo! I'm really happy to see these two back together.

The episode ends with Derek and Meredith looking through her mom's boxes again and discovering that there is a big box filled with more of her mom's diaries. Hmm.. I wonder what secrets she will find in these?

Hmmm...

Great recap as always! You really don't like Hunt? Even just a little? I will admit (just to you though lol) when you said he stabbed those pigs I was all WTF?!? Now I'm gonna have to go to abc.com and see if I can watch the episode!

Glad you liked it! Hunt is

Glad you liked it! Hunt is just too much of a know-it-all for me. He doesn't want to listen to doctors that are some of the best in the country. I hope if he's actually going to be sticking around that he starts to lose the attitude. The stabbing of the pigs was pretty bad. I was happy that Izzie took a stand. It's good to see the old Izzie back that doesn't take any shit. Thanks for the comments every week.. I REALLY appreciate it!!

Creeepy

I was all set to like Hunt, and then he stabs the pigs, and I thought "uh-oh" PTSD big-time. He rallies though by being wonderfully complex and more able than anyone else on the show to take criticism and hear other people's arguments. Lots of great acting from KMcK.

Thanks for the recap, Chad!
