Grey's Anatomy: Rise Up (Episode 84)

Meredith and Cristina are enthralled in reading Meredith's mom's diaries. Christina says they're like the Harry Potter books she never had. Derek is not happy because Meredith and Christina are on the phone all night so he can't sleep. Alex and Izzie don't have a problem sleeping... with each other. They seem to falling into the boyfriend-girlfriend thing pretty well. I just wonder how long this will last.

The next morning at Seattle Grace, Bailey shows up arguing with Tucker about marriage counseling. After she gets off the phone Derek whines about Meredith keeping him up all night. Derek then tells Bailey that marriage counseling can be a good thing, he and Addison did it, Bailey points out that they ended up getting divorced.

Last week Izzie went off on Hunt when they were forced to work on live pigs, so this week the residents and interns will be working on a dummy. Meredith and Izzie will be with Hahn for the day though, Cristina gets the pit, and Alex and George will be working on the dummy.

Hahn's patient for the day just so happens to be, Michael, who is the guy that Izzie stole the heart away from for Denny. You know this isn't going to be good.

Derek tells Sloane that he needs him to have sex with Cristina to distract her from Meredith for a while. Sloane doesn't want Cristina but when Derek challenges him saying that he probably couldn't sleep wit her anyway Sloane gives in.

Lexie finds the other interns in the basement looking like they're shooting drugs. She confronts them and finds out they're just practicing on each other. She later finds out that there are quite a few unclaimed corpses, and she decides they would be perfect for her and the fellow interns to work on. But, when she tells them about this Alex overhears and lays claim to them, and of course he's all powerful because he's a junior resident. At least he shares with the other junior residents though.

In the pit, a patient comes in but instead of getting to work on him right away Cristina is more concerned with asking the Chief about this solo surgery contest that is going on. Just then the patient has something major go wrong and Hunt blames Cristina for not paying attention, he says if she wasn't so concerned with winning contests she might have noticed. Hunt continues to belittle Cristina telling her to act like a doctor. Later, Cristina and Alex argue about procedures for the guy and who gets to do what, Hunt overhears them and throws them off the case. He says that this is totally disrespectful of the patient and it's not unacceptable, and surprisingly I completely agree with Hunt. They are always fighting over patients like they're just dummies -- like George is working on -- but they forget these are humans, just like themselves, and they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

Hahn, Meredith and Izzie meet Michael and have to tell him what will happen during his procedure. The problem with him is that he can hardly breathe at the moment, they're going to do something to help him. If he doesn't have this procedure the next heart attack that he has, and he will have one, will kill him. Just then Izzie sees dead Denny walking the halls. Is she losing her mind? Maybe. They end up doing the procedure on Michael and Izzie is supposed to be helping to keep the guy calm but instead she's off in a psycho-land seeing Denny walking the halls. She really needs to snap out of it but instead she says she can't do this and runs out. Meredith knows exactly what's going on, but Hahn has no clue because she wasn't there, she just chalks it up to Izzie being a bad doctor. The procedure ends up being a failure because the guy can't calm down, thanks to Izzie. Later, Meredith tells Hahn that there's more to the story and she should talk to Izzie about it. Izzie is hiding out though, Meredith finds her and tells her that she should really talk to Hahn. Hahn talks to Callie first though and finds out the story between Izzie and Denny and how Izzie basically stole the donor heart that Michael should've received for Denny, who died anyway. Hahn gets pissed off and goes to the Chief demanding that there be a full investigation and that Izzie be fired. The Chief gets pissed off right back and tells Hahn it's none of her business, it's in the past and he already handled it. Hahn doesn't think that's enough, she thinks Izzie should be gone and she's willing to go against Seattle Grace if that's what it takes. In the meantime though she just forces Izzie to deal with Michael and get him to try the procedure again. She tells Izzie that she's going to fix it or she can watch him die. Michael just wants to give up, he says his wife will eventually get over it and move on but Izzie tells him that's not true, no matter what she does she will never be able to fully move on. She would know, she is the one who is still having visions of Denny. Michael finally agrees to do the procedure again and this time Izzie snaps out of her visions long enough to calm Michael down.

Alex gives up on working with the "stupid" dummy and leaves George alone to deal with it. Alex says some not so nice stuff about the dummy and surprisingly the dummy talks back. After Alex leaves George figures it'll be smooth sailing, after all what can go wrong with a dummy, right? Well, George is in for a treat. He ends up having to spend the entire day working on the dummy because everytime he gets one thing taken care, or so he thinks, then something else goes wrong. We later find out that the Chief is behind the whole thing, he can make the dummy do whatever he'd like and say whatever he'd like, such as "I'm surprised you even passed your intern exam." You'd think George would have figured it out at that point but he's a little dense. Eventually at the end of the day he catches on. To be honest after the countless episodes of George wanting to be a junior resident so bad it sort of seems insulting that now that he is a resident he's working on a dummy the whole episode. When are these skills labs going to be over? The thing with the pigs last week was one thing but then the dummy this week, I'm ready for some juicy storylines.

Derek and Bailey's patient for the day is Rosie, an older lady who has to have surgery for something or another and apparently it's just one of many surgeries that she has had or will have done. She signs a 'do not resuscitate' form before surgery and then she and her husband go through their tradition of telling each other "goodbye" and then kissing and hugging, Ed tells Derek and Bailey that after each surgery they then say "hello" to one another again. It's very touching and Derek and Bailey, neither of which have clearly had any luck with marriage, both comment on how Rosie and Ed seem to be the holy grail of marriages. Of course, with a storyline being this touching we know it's not going to end well, and it doesn't, sadly. Rosie ends up coming out of surgery ok but she never wakes up and eventually flat lines, even though she and Ed made it clear that she didn't want to be resuscitated, Ed is upset that the docs aren't doing anything and he starts doing compressions on Rosie. Derek and Bailey watch him do this for several minutes, Bailey then takes over doing the compressions, slowly. They know she's already passed away, but if this is what it takes to let it slowly sink in for Ed then they're willing to do it. Derek even helps do a few compressions before they let Rosie go. As sad as this is it does actually warm your heart a little to see Derek and Bailey get personal with a patient, considering they are both so rigid all the time. Maybe Izzie is starting to rub off on these two, if even in the slightest way. Ed ends up leaving alone without his beloved wife. As depressing as it is, life goes on.

Throughout the episode Sloane tries to make good on his bet with Derek by hitting on Cristina. She is totally oblivious to any of his flirting. He finally comes out and tells her that he's been hitting on her. She is shocked at first and then she starts dying laughing. She can't believe Sloane actually thought he had a chance with her. He must not realize that 2/3 of the docs view him as a male whore. Things between Cristina and Hunt finally come to a head but actually end peacefully. He tells her that she's a great surgeon but that she shouldn't be in it just for the contests. She tells him why she got into the medical field in the first place and that was because she was in a car accident with her dad when she was 9 years old. She lived, he died. She desperately tried to keep her dad alive, trying her best to keep his chest closed on the way to the hospital but ultimately he died and she felt his heart stop in her hands. She tells him that this is why she is a doctor, this why she does this, and this is why she wins all the contests. Finally, we get to the bottom of why Cristina is the way she is and it all makes sense.

In the end, Izzie finally comes to terms with her hallucinations of Denny, or at least she attempts to. But, just as she's about to put all that in the past, will Hahn report Izzie and Seattle Grace to the medical board and dig it all back up again? That's doubtful considering this will be the final episode for Hahn. ABC decided to cut her out of the show, I'm guessing the Disney network is starting to get a little pissy that so many of their shows have gay characters (Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Brothers and Sisters). The last scene with Hahn is of her and Callie arguing about Izzie. Callie stands up for Izzie telling Hahn that the incident was dealt with, Izzie was punished, case closed. She tells Hahn that you have to have each other's backs. Hahn argues that Izzie should be fired and the hospital should lose their transplant license and that's all there is to it. She says maybe her and Callie don't know each other at all, and then she walks to her car to never be seen again.

I must admit, as much as I didn't like Hahn in the beginning I had actually started to like her character. She was no longer just a mean bitch to everyone but she seemed to finally have a personality. I still wasn't that into her storyline with Callie, it seemed to forced to me, but I thought it was going to be interesting to see how it all unfolded. I wonder how they will write this into future episodes, I mean how do you explain Hahn just no longer showing up? And, Callie is going to have to deal with losing her, whereever they are going to say she went. And, last my question is whether Hahn will still report Izzie and Seattle Grace? They could go in a million directions with this so it'll be interesting to see how this unfolds now. I do have to say it's a shame if ABC and Disney pulled Hahn if it was simply for the lesbian storyline. While they have many other shows with gay storylines between men, I'm not sure we've seen a lesbian one.
