The second half of the season gets off to a quickie start, literally. Meredith doesn't want to wake up for work so she suggests to Derek that they have a quickie to start the day off with a bang.
Once at work Meredith and Cristina walk together but don't speak to one another. George tells Izzie happy birthday which takes her by surprise. I'm not sure if she's surprised George is telling her happy b-day or if she forgot it is her b-day. Positions for the day go something like this... George is in the pit, Alex is with Bailey for surgery, Izzie needs to get the clinic budget submitted, and Cristina and Meredith are to meet Derek and the Chief at the bay.
We start with Christina, Meredith, Derek and the Chief who are prepping for a death row prisoner to be brought in. This involves quite a bit of planning and preparation to ensure everyone's safety and security. The patient is brought in handcuffed to a stretcher.
Moving on to Lexie who is in a room with Sloane. He tells her that what happened between them won't happen again. Remember they got it on at the end of the last episode before the holidays. Lexie tells him "ok" but the look on her face speaks volumes. Clearly she doesn't buy that it won't happen again. It looks like the Grey girls are taking charge of their sexual destiny this episode.
George's patient is a rambling woman who has broken countless bones in the past six months. She even broke something while doing yoga. "YOGA!" she exclaims.
Bailey and Alex's patient is a young boy who has had 12 bowel surgeries. Bailey pulls the mom and Alex aside and makes it clear to Alex that this mom and boy are like family, they have been through so much. Meanwhile, we meet an older doctor that I assume has been at Seattle Grace for a while but is just new to us. As he's looking at the boy he collapses. He had a massive heart attack and died. Bailey goes to the Chief a little while later and asks how they should proceed with arrangements to honor the doctor for his time with Seattle Grace and his achievements. The Chief just stares at Bailey and then walks away. WTF?
Izzie is still having her ridiculously annoying visions of Denny. She tries yet again to convince Denny that Alex loves her -- he told her so -- and she needs to be honest with him. Denny tells her that he'll think she's crazy.
Back to the kid with bowel problems, he tries to convince Alex to sign some paper that will let him make a wish and have it come true before he dies. Alex won't sign on to it because he says the boy is not dying.
Sloane fills Callie in on his sexcapades with little 'ole Lexie. As he's giving the juicy details Sadie walks up and pulls a piece of lint out of Callie's hair. Callie gets all tongue-tied and can barely put together a sentence. After Sadie walks away Callie just stands there with her jaw hanging near the floor. She and Sloane look at Sadie and Lexie talking and can't believe what 'sexed up stalkers' the latest batch of interns are. Yummy!
There is another new doc rolling on into Seattle Grace. She's the new peds doc taking over for the guy that just croked. Her name is Arizona Robbins. Wait, is this a word play on the NFL team Arizona Cardinals? How clever. She doesn't make a good first impression with Bailey because their entire first conversation is spent with Arizona criticizing the way the previous doc and Bailey treated the boy with the bowel problems. She says she will do it the 'old' way today but then they should move forward with other options. She doesn't stick around long enough for Bailey to argue her points, instead Arizona skates off on those rollerskate-shoes, or whatever they are. Apparently even at 22 I'm too old to understand those things.
Back to the death row inmate. The docs are none to pleased with having to nurse the bastard back to health only to be executed in a week. It turns out that the guy is going to be paralyzed and, according to him, if he is paralyzed they will have to delay the execution. But, get this, Derek tells the guy he won't allow for that to happen. This all leads to a discussion between Derek, Hunt, Meredith and Cristina over who is pro-death penalty, yada yada yada. They go back to the guy and find out that the object that is in his back is a toothbrush/knife. He got in a fight with a friend and he stabbed him with it in the spine.
Izzie finally tells Alex about seeing Denny but she downplays it A LOT. Alex thinks she's whacked at first but then admits he saw his grandma once after she died in a dream in which she told him not to play with his 'parts.' This awkward moments finishes out the conversation and Izzie moves on to the boy with bowel problems. He asks her to help come up with a wish, she suggests a trip to China. Alex comes in and tells her that he's a con artist, he's not dying and therefore not eligible.
To George's patient who keeps breaking things we go. They tell her that she has a benign tumor on a gland that is robbing her body of calcium which is why her bones keep breaking. She freaks out, she can't believe she's been living like an old lady for all this time because of a tumor that is easy to remove. She then tells them a story about how she fell in love with this guy who gave her the best sex of her life but he wanted her to move to Colorado and she couldn't because of the ice and breaking bones. Umm... bad storyline what?
Bailey and Arizona butt heads again in surgery on the boy with bowels problems. Once they've cut into him Arizona points out that his bowels and liver are shot, he should've been on a transplant list a year ago. She tells Bailey he's lucky to even be alive at this point. Bailey stands there in disbelief. Bailey goes to the Chief, who has locked himself away in a 'do not disturb' room to mourn the loss of that doc who we had never even heard of before. Bailey goes off on the Chief for hiring rollerskating know-it-all Arizona Robbins. He tells her that she doesn't like any of the docs, this is who they have and she'll have to get over it.
Meredith goes to Derek to let him know the death row dude is in pain and could use more morphine. He tells her not to give him any more morphine. This upsets Meredith but what's she going to do.
Sloane and Callie meet in the nap room and decide they need to be each others 'sponsors' so that they don't get freaky with any more sexed up stalker interns. Before they head to surgery they start thinking of the rules.
At lunch - yes, 23 min. into the episode and we are just now at lunch - George says it's a shame that they aren't doing anything fun for Izzie's birthday. George says Alex should be doing something for her... hint, hint. Alex says he has it taken care of. The convo turns to the death row inmate. Cristina doesn't like it, well specifically Meredith, so she gets up and leaves. Izzie asks Meredith if she's going to kill Cristina in a 'crime of passion.'
After lunch Cristina can't hold back, she asks the guy what he did that sent him to death row. He tells them that he slit a woman's throat. He had thought about doing it for a long time and then he finally did it, and it was 'kind of fun.' He enjoyed it so much he started slitting more and more throats for days. He has a completely serious and unremorseful look on his face the whole time he's telling the story.
Derek goes to talk to the Chief, who is still locked away in a room. The Chief tells Derek that he's not upset over the doc dying, it doesn't sound like they got along that well. He tells Derek that he's worried about his hospital dying. Things are falling apart, Seattle Grace is now ranked #12. He says he has failed and he's going to sit there until he can figure something out.
Izzie pulls Alex aside again to tell him about her Denny craziness. She says she doesn't think she made herself clear enough earlier. Uh.. you think? She tells him that her and Denny still 'get it on' sometimes. Alex says there's nothing wrong with a fantasy here and there. He starts kissing Izzie all the way down, if you know what I mean. He says Denny can't do that. They proceed to have sex.
In surgery on the death row inmate Meredith and Cristina continue their petty battle. They trade barbs over who is the natural surgeon. Meredith is really bitchy. Bailey and Arizona also have some words. Arizona says the boy with the bowel and liver problems absolutely needs to be put on the transplant list. Bailey argues that they should get a second opinion. So, Arizona writes down a doc Bailey can talk to for the second opinion. Arizona then goes off on Bailey telling her that she realizes she's new and she has a ponytail and all that but she's not the problem, the problem is this boy is going to die if he's not treated and that's what Bailey should be focusing on. I think I like Arizona!
At the end of the day, Sadie and Meredith have a chat. Sadie reminds Meredith that they used to be as good of friends as Meredith and Cristina were until they had a fight in Amsterdam and after that Meredith just shut her out. She says that's how things are going to go if she doesn't make things right with Cristina.
Bailey has a tearful, heartfelt conversation with the boy that needs a bowel and liver transplant and his mom. It's odd to see Bailey so emotional devoted to a patient considering she's always the one telling everyone not to get emotional connected. What's the difference between this case and the way Izzie connects with patients? Bailey takes the mom to go sign transplant papers, while they're out of the room the boy gives Alex the 'make a wish' papers and this time Alex does it.
The fragile woman with the tumor on a gland is out of surgery and doing fine. She says she's going to Denver to get her man back.
Callie and Sloane hit the bar after work and try their best to stay focused and not let the sexed up interns put a spell on them but Sloane can't resist. Callie is still trying to hold on... for now at least.
Bailey goes to the Chief again, this time in tears looking for his advice on the boy. He finally gives and crumples up the 'do not disturb' sign and invites her into the room to discuss the patient.
Derek goes home and tells Meredith why he treated the death row inmate so harshly. His dad was shot by two men over a watch. He tries to make Meredith feel better by acting like Cristina and dancing with her. Meredith is stand-offish at first but finally jumps in and starts dancing too.
Alex surprises Izzie with a pink, slight lopsided cake for her birthday. He lights the one candle on it and tells her to make a wish. She asks what she should do if she has nothing left to wish for, he says to wish that nothing changes then.
