White House. Lurch informs the President that Tony is being transported to the FBI field office for interrogation. She doesn't understand why Tony doesn't have the CIP device, since he was orchestrating the attacks. Steven speaks up and informs everyone that Tony is working for General Candyman's regime, as they just got a phone call from Dubaku. He plays a tape of the message Dubaku left, but due to a mix of audio quality and Dubaku's accent, it's hard to make out exactly what he's saying. Long story short, he wants them to pull the US troops out of Sangala in 24 hours and they need to see them starting to move out in three hours. They discuss several options and Taylor has them issue alerts to first responders to be ready for another attack. She also has them tell the FBI to get their asses in gear and get whatever they can out of Tony.
FBI. Agent Ass' helicopter lands on the roof. He sends Tony off with some agents to be prepped for questioning, then turns around and tears Renee a new one for going off on her own while Jack hangs back and watches with mild interest through his aviator shades. Renee tells Agent Ass that the FBI has a leak and Jack speaks up to spell out for him how they know the leak exists. AA asks if they have any idea who it is. They don't, but Jack suggests tightening the circle around Tony until they do know. AA agrees to restrict it to those with high-level clearance and wants Janis to start checking people out. His phone rings; it's the White House. Before he leaves to take the call in his office, he turns on Renee and says, "From now on, keep me in the loop. And he doesn't do a damn thing without telling me." He takes off and our Dynamic Duo heads towards where Tony's being held.
Interrogation. Poor Janis is nervously fitting Tony with a heart monitor, which requires her to pull up his shirt to place the leads on his chest. Don't they have some kind of medical person who could be doing this? She asks if the leads are comfortable, her voice shaking. Tony continues to silently stare at the wall, so she takes that as a yes and leaves. She meets up with Renee and Jack in the observation room and Renee tells her about the leak and gives her the task of finding out who it is. As Janis scurries away, Renee looks at Jack. He's staring at Tony through the one-way mirror looking quite sad. She offers condolences of the "I'm sorry your best friend is evil" variety. We cut to the Cubicle Farm, where Janis is confronted by Sean about the sudden lockdown. Janis snaps that he has access to everything he needs to do his job and he sits back down at his desk, sending an ambiguous facial expression her way. Ladies and gentlemen, do we have a Candidate Number 1 for the season seven mole? I think we do.
At Dubaku's high-tech command center, Emerson reports to the liason, Nichols, that Tony has been arrested by the FBI. Nichols is not happy with this news and says they need to get someone new. Emerson points out that they have people inside the FBI who could help get Tony out, since he's already prepped for the next mission. Which is not exactly true; Tanner never got a chance to tell Tony what the mission was before Jack and Renee busted in. Nichols is adamant that it's too risky and they'll just have to get someone else. Dubaku storms up to them and says that General Candyman just called to say the troops are still in position. He wants to make another demonstration, for real this time. Nichols is all, "The President just got your message, like, ten minutes ago. Chill out, dude." He manages to convince Dubaku to give the White House more time to respond.
Interrogation. Agent Ass comes into the observation room and pulls Renee aside to tell her that Tony's working for Candyman. We can hear what he's saying clearly from where the camera is still in front of Jack, which means Jack sure as hell can hear them. Great job, dude. When he says Candyman's going to blackmail the White Hours, Jack asks how. Agent Ass takes a moment to be shocked that his brilliant attempts at secrecy don't work in a tiny, insulated room before saying that Dubaku will use the CIP device unless Taylor withdraws the troops in Sangala. Jack says that he can get the device if they let him interrogate Tony. Agent Ass paces a bit as he thinks about it, then lets Jack into the room with a pained expression.
Jack orders the security guard out and then asks Tony how it's possible for him to still be alive. Tony says nothing. He tells Tony that he knows he's working for Candyman and warns him that he can save himself a lot of pain if he tells Jack where the CIP device is. Tony: "I'm afraid I can't do that, Jack." Jack tries to reason with him, saying that he'll be charged internationally with aiding a genocide and he could get the death penalty. Tony replies that Dubaku's serious, and President Taylor should withdraw the troops. Jack wants to know why Tony's doing this. His answer? Money. "[Candyman] wanted the CIP module and he was willing to pay for it." Tony says that money's the only reason he has for doing anything these days and Jack points out that Charles Logan had Michelle killed, not the government. Tony argues that the government poisons everything - Charles Logan is a product of his environment. "Look what [the government] did to you." He asks why Jack is working for the people who are trying to put him in jail. He tries to argue that the government screwed up his life, pointing out that Kim wants nothing to do with him, which I personally see as a plus instead of a minus. Jack tells him to shut up and Tony yells that he needs to hear this. "You need to start living in the real world! Because every second you help the government, you're spitting on Terri's grave!" Well, that's it. Jack flings the table out of the way, picks up Tony by his shirt, and slams him against the wall. He growls, "So help me God, I will kill you and you will stay dead this time. Where is the device?" Tony leans in and whispers "deep sky" into Jack's ear. Just then Agent Ass comes charging into the room. Jack drops Tony and raises his hands in the air in a "I didn't touch him" gesture. I have made the same gesture many times when I have been confronted by a particularly ugly price tag while shopping. AA has Jack escorted from the room.
The security guard takes Jack to a random office and posts another guard outside the door. Jack mutters to himself as he dials a phone number on his cell. A scrambled voice answers. Jack identifies himself and says that Tony gave him his old CTU emergency phone code. We see the person on the other end take away the voice changer and the camera pulls back to reveal - holy crap - a scruffy Bill Buchanan! He asks Bill what the hell is going on and informs him that Tony is under arrest at FBI headquarters. Bill says he'll call him back on a secure line and hangs up. We stay with Bill as he walks by a couple computers and Chloe O'Brian stands up. What is going on here? She asks if Bill's going to tell Jack everything and he says they're going to need his help to get Tony back undercover. 10:17:39.
10:21:56. White House. Lurch intercepts Henry as he returns from his trip to interrogate Samantha. He explains that Taylor needs his support and he can't be out chasing paranoid fantasies. Henry pouts that Samantha was hiding something about Roger's death. He says that Roger didn't have any reason to commit suicide. Lurch disagrees, and reveals that Roger was about to be investigated for insider trading. He hands the case file to Henry, who wonders why he never heard about this. Lurch says Taylor had the case buried to protect Henry's memory of his son. He says that Taylor doesn't know he's telling him this, and it'd be best to keep his knowledge of this to himself until the Sangala crisis is over. If I know this show, and I like to think that after six seasons I know it pretty well, that file is completely fake and Lurch had something to do with Roger's death. He's called away by an aide to the Oval Office as Henry sullenly flips through the file.
Oval Office. Taylor says that in order to meet Dubaku's demands, they have to order the pull back by 1:00. Lurch asks if Tony is going to talk or make a deal, but Taylor says she talked with Agent Ass and he said not to count on anything. She says that either way she decides, thousands of people will die and depending on which choice, it will be Americans or Sangalans. Pick the Sangalans, Taylor! It's not even a real country!
Buchanan's Basement Base. Chloe's set up the secure line. Bill calls Jack and explains that Tony is working deep cover. He says that the government is corrupted by people actively aiding Dubaku. Tony was supposed to be near the CIP module the whole time to ensure that no one actually got hurt. Jack wants to know the names of people involved. Bill says the only know the low-level operatives, but they have reason to believe that there are people in the President's cabinet involved. Jack asks which agency they're working with and Bill replies that there is no agency; they're working outside the government, beyond the police. He needs Jack's help in getting Tony out of FBI custody and back undercover. Chloe's already in the system. Chloe gets on the line and says hi. "I saw the hearings on C-Span; I can't believe what the senator said to you...You looked good, though." Hell yeah he did. Also, hee. Jack says Renee can help and he trusts her. Bill says that if he brings her in he'll be making her a target, which makes Jack think twice about that plan and if you can't see the foundation for a relationship between Jack and Renee being laid, you've never watched TV before. Jack agrees to get Tony out himself. 10:28:42.
10:32:58. Cubicle Farm. Janis asks Sean about some random file and he bitches at her about having to dance around security clearances. Janis snots that she thought he'd welcome the opportunity to complain about something, which doesn't make sense as that is exactly what he's doing. Sean makes another ambiguous facial expression as she goes back to her desk and turns back to his computer. He's trying to do something but keeps getting denied access.
White House. Henry gets a phone call. It's Samantha. He calls her Sam and apologizes for confronting her like he did. She replies that he doesn't owe her an apology, as she was indeed hiding something. She confirms that Roger was murdered and asks to meet him. He agrees.
Interrogation. "Where's the CIP device, Tony?" Agent Ass asks in a perfectly calm voice. "Who'd you give it to?" This is so lame. He's not even raising his voice. Hell, I wouldn't confess to a parking violation under that kind of "pressure". AA lays out photos of Candyman's handiwork, hoping to guilt a confession out of him. Tony looks up at the security camera with a bored expression and says his conscience is clear. Renee is watching and calls Agent Ass back into the observation room. She says that Tony knows all the interrogation techniques and they're not going to break him like this. They need a more forceful approach. She tries to argue her point but AA isn't hearing it. He doesn't like the ideas Jack's put into her head, and orders her to debrief him (not that way, though I certainly wouldn't mind seeing that) and send him back to the senate. She stomps out of the room.
She walks through the Cubicle Farm on her way to the office Jack's in. Janis stops her and says she may have found the leak. Someone got around the security and into the FAA database. She doesn't know who it was, but she thinks she can pull a user ID off the terminal. Renee tells her to do it and stops another agent to tell him to get her a debriefing packet and Jack's personal effects. She then heads into the office.
Janis arrives at the server room and pulls up the user ID on a screen. It's Sean. She turns around and he's right behind her. She backs up and tries to pick up the phone to call someone but he stops her. She says she knows he broke into the FAA database. Sean explains that he just wanted to see if his wife's flight had been grounded yet. He goes to the screen and pulls up the passenger list of the flight, highlighting his wife's name. Janis yells at him for scaring the crap out of her.
Office, Jack has an earpiece attached to his cellphone, which he tucks in his pocket as Chloe calls. She informs him that Renee is on her way. She also explains that she has a series of security camera loops that she's going to use as they go. He takes out the earpiece and sits down as Renee walks in and informs him that the FBI is proceeding without his help. When she brings over the paperwork, he puts her in a sleeper hold. He whispers "don't fight it" as she struggles. Once she's out, he lays her on the table and takes her gun and security card. 10:41:54.
10:46:08. Chloe updates Bill on what's going on has he heads towards the FBI in a blue van. He's about ten minutes away. She switches over to Jack, who has slung the Jack Pack over his shoulder and cocked the gun. She tells him the corridor is clear and he heads towards interrogation. He uses Renee's card to get in and points his gun at Agent Ass and the security guard. He makes them kick their weapons over to him. When Jack has the security guy uncuff Tony, he knocks AA out while Tony takes the guard. Jack tells Tony that he talked to Bill and Chloe's going to help them get out. Chloe directs them to the southwest stairwell but as they go out into the corridor, she spots two people coming out of the elevator. We get a neat split screen of the security camera seeing Jack and Tony go into a nearby office and the camera following them as they do it. While they're waiting, Tony apologizes for what he said earlier and Jack tells him to be thankful he didn't break his neck. Chloe says they're clear and they move.
Janis tells Sean that she cleaned up his trail and Sean has her take a look at something. Someone is using their bandwidth and hacking in. Janis sits down at her computer and finds that the hacker is in their security system. She starts working to lock them out.
Chloe is directing the boys when she suddenly loses her security feed.
Sean is looking at the security feeds and sends one to Janis. It's of the interrogation room where Agent Ass and the security guard are unconscious. Janis calls security and reports a security breach.
Sirens start going off. The guys keep moving only to find a security team between them and the stairwell. Chloe says she's trying to get back in but they keep blocking her. "It's really starting to piss me off." 10:51:15.
10:55:30. The security team spreads out and Jack and Tony make a break for the stairwell. Agent Ass, who has regained consciousness, strides into the Cubicle Farm and wants to know where they are. He dabs at his bloody nose with a handkerchief as Renee comes jogging up. She apologizes and says she shouldn't have trusted Jack. Janis spots Jack and Tony on a security camera in the stairwell. They send the security teams after them.
Chloe has managed to get her feed back up and she spots the teams coming after them. Jack breaks open a window with a fire extinguisher that just happens to lead onto the roof of the parking garage. Chloe directs them to the north end and says Bill's almost there.
Security spots Jack and Tony out the broken window. Renee has Sean tell the police to set up a five-block perimeter, because perimeters have always worked so well on this show.
Jack and Tony run into the security team. Jack sends Tony away and covers him by firing on the team. He takes cover behind a car and smashes the window. He climbs in and uses the butt of his gun to break open the ignition and expose the wires. Meanwhile, Bill screeches up in his blue van right behind Tony. Jack hotwires the car, his head down near the pedals. He mutters to himself, "This is gonna hurt." He then puts the car in gear and hits the gas. The car breaks through the concrete barrier and lands on top of three cars right where Tony is. Tony covers Jack as he climbs out of the car and gets into the van, holding his shoulder. Tony jumps in after him and Bill peels out. Chloe reports that they caught them off guard and they aren't persuing the van. Jack asks what's going on. Bill says he'll explain everything when they get there.
