Previously on 24: A few of our old friends from CTU went underground and became the A-Team. Jack helped Tony escape from FBI custody.
FBI. Janis says security saw Jack and Tony get into a van and head West. Sean says the hacker is jamming the traffic cameras so he can't spot them. Renee apologizes to Agent Ass for letting Jack play her; she thinks that Tony offered him a way out of a federal indictment and years in prison. She promises to make things right as Agent Ass goes to take a phone call from the White House. Renee head over to Janis' desk and asks about the status of the shooter. I guess Tanner survived his stint as Jack's human shield. Janis says that he hasn't regained consciousness, but they have ID'd him. She wants to know the second he's awake.
Conference Room. Agent Ass takes the call from the White House. He explains to Lurch and Taylor how Jack helped Tony escape. Lurch tears AA a new one until Taylor stops him and asks if they have any other leads. Agent Ass informs them that they're waiting for Tanner to wake up. Taylor says that finding Jack and Tony is their only priority and to keep them posted. Lurch hangs up. The President is still torn on what to do and Lurch says that they need to make a decision now.
Bill leads Jack up the stairs of what looks like some kind of abandoned hotel or something and says they like to call it CTU. Chloe appears and is glad to see Jack. Jack wants some answers and the first one he wants is why Tony's not dead. Tony says he was dead for ten minutes until someone in CTU who worked for Emerson revived him. Emerson recruited him. Tony admits he was really working for Emerson for three years until this CIP job, which involved killing innocent Americans. Tony knew the government had been corrupted by Dubaku's people so he went to Bill. Since Dubaku is the key to the conspiracy, Tony needs to get back under cover for the next job, which will put him in the room with Dubaku. Bill explains that Emerson is going to know that Tony was arrested and Jack points out that if Tony comes waltzing back in, they're going to think he made a deal. Bill and Tony send Jack significant looks and he realizes that they want him to help. Jack asks, "Outside of the three of you, who else is involved in this operation?" Chloe answers this is it; there isn't anyone else. Jack: "Please, please tell me that you've got some proof that this conspiracy exists." Bill says that they only have proof for people at the lowest level. Jack finally agrees to work with them, but only because they're the only people he trusts and if he thinks they're betraying him, he'll turn them in. Bill has Chloe call Emerson.
A henchman is explaining to Emerson that he found two new people to do the job when he gets the call. He's surprised to hear from Tony, even though he heard he broke out of FBI custody. He also heard that Jack broke him out after arresting him. Tony explains that Jack didn't have a choice in the whole arresting-him thing and he's in now; Tony told Jack that if he helped they would get him out of the country. He says that Jack can take Tanner's place. Emerson agrees and gives Tony an address. 11:11:57.
11:16:27. White House. Henry is writing a note in what I guess is the living quarters when there's a knock at the door. It's HSSA. Henry wants him to take him somewhere without a driver and without putting it on the manifest. HSSA won't do it until he gets an explanation, so Henry tells him that Samantha called him with new information about Roger's death. HSSA is like, "Not this again." Henry explains that she initiated it and this will be the last time. HSSA sighs inwardly and agrees. Taylor comes out of the bedroom and has Henry help her with a bracelet as she exposits that she's meeting with Prime Minister Matobo again and he's going to want to know why she hasn't authorized the invasion yet. She says that she doesn't know what the right decision is, and Henry says that he trusts her judgement.
FBI. Renee has Sean widen the grid, since they can assume that by now Jack and Tony have evaded the perimeter. She walks off and Sean gets a phone call from his wife on the plane. She says her plane is in a holding pattern and she heard a rumor about the near-miss. Sean assures her that she's going to be fine and tells her to call him when she lands. A random blonde employee asks if he's okay, since she heard from Janis about his wife. Sean snaps that he is not okay and walks off. Janis flags down Renee and says that Tanner is awake and has already called his lawyers. Renee tells Janis to grab her laptop. "You're coming with me." She needs to get to Tanner before his lawyers do and she needs Janis on hand to send the information he gives them immediately to the office.
Jack and Tony are on their way to Emerson's. Tony fills Jack in on Emerson's history and says he's not some ex-military whack job. "He's about two things - money and personal loyalty." Jack observes that Tony admires him and Tony admits that he treated him like a brother when he had no one. But he assures Jack that it won't be a problem. "I know he's on the wrong side of this. I'll do what has to be done." They pull up at the address. Tony takes out his earpiece but leaves it on so Chloe and Bill can hear what's going on. A minion opens the door and let's them into a very nice townhouse. Emerson has the minion take Jack downstairs while he talks to Tony. Emerson informs Tony that bringing in Jack isn't worth the risk. They argue about it and Emerson pulls out a gun. Tony asks if he's going to kill Jack. Emerson replies, "No, you are."
At CTU Underground, Chloe panics. Bill says that Jack will get out of it and if he can't, his death will solidify Tony's position in the crew. Chloe figures out that they knew all along that this might happen. Bill: "And so did Jack."
Jack has caught on that sitting around in the basement doesn't mean anything good. He attacks the goon standing closest to him, pushing him into the wooden stairs, and knocks him down with a headbutt. The second goon starts shooting and Jack hides behind a pillar. He trips the goon with a piece of wood from the stairs, takes his gun, and puts it to his head as Emerson and Tony come down the stairs. Emerson has his gun drawn. Jack yells at Emerson that he needs good men, not the wimps he just took out in five seconds while unarmed. Emerson lowers his gun. The goon says that if Jack's in, he's out. Emerson agrees and walks towards Jack before shooting the goon. Jack offers his gun to Emerson and he tells him to keep it. 11:26:25.
11: 30:51. Sean is on the phone with the FAA telling them to give his wife's flight priority for landing. he uses Agent Ass' name and access number.
White House. Lurch plays Dubaku's threat for Matobo. Matobo understand their situation, but Candyman's troops are moving in on a refugee camp filled with women and children, and some of his fighters have left and joined Matobo's resistance movement with the promise of American help. Taylor asks him to be patient and he leaves after telling her that they're counting on her. Once he's gone, she asks Lurch why he didn't tell her about the refugee camp, especially since it's a detail that might push her towards the invasion. Lurch repeats that he believes the best course of action is to comply with Dubaku and that a superpower has to act in it's own best interests first. She tells him to check in with the FBI on their search for Jack and Tony.
Townhouse. Jack has changed into dark jeans and a black long-sleeved shirt. I liked the suit, but this has the familiar feeling of Action Hero Jack. Emerson tells him that when a decision is made, he better follow it or he's gone. Jack replies, "I heard a lot of guys say that. Good to know you mean it." Emerson prods Jack about his travels and why he came back to America and turned himself in. Jack says that he believes everything he did was right and he wanted to come forward and set the record straight. Emerson says that people who haven't been where they have can never understand. He gets a phone call and wanders off and Tony seizes the opportunity to talk to Jack. He places some kind of bug on the back of a chair and warns Jack not to underestimate him. Emerson finishes his call and says that their next mission is a go. He says they'll be picking up a package and delivering it to their client. He passes out layouts of the residence and tells the guys to memorize them, saying they don't know where the pickup point is but it will probably be the master suite. Tony figures out that the package is a person. Emerson gives Tony a gold star for the day and brings up a photo of their target. "Former Prime Minister Matobo." Their job is to grab him and deliver him to Dubaku.
CTU Underground. Chloe and Bill are listening to a crystal clear audio feed of this, so I guess that's what the bug Tony planted before was. Chloe says they have to stop this, but Bill knows that if they stop this it will blow Tony and Jack's covers and they'll never get to Dubaku. Chloe reluctantly agrees. 11:38:44.
11:43:09. HSSA and Henry pull up at the Tidal Basin by the Washington Monument. It's a nice park. I went paddle-boating in the basin when I visited. Henry convinces HSSA to hang out on the bridge while he meets Sam down by the water. She walks up, looking around nervously, and says she can't stay long. She says that Roger was murdered by the same people who provided the false documents on insider trading and they told her if she said anything they'd kill her. Roger was given the job of looking for kickbacks in the firm, but instead found that two of the managers had taken on a client that was doing business with Sangala and when he dug deeper he found other accounts trading with Sangala and one of those accounts was traced back to a senior member of President Taylor's administration. She doesn't know who, but they have a vested interest in opposing military action in Sangala as they were betting against Taylor. It doesn't make much sense to me either. Sam hand Henry a flash drive with all of Roger's information on it and takes off. We see through HSSA's binoculars as he watches the exchange from the bridge and makes an ambiguous facial expression.
Hospital. Renee and Janis have arrived to question Tanner. She asks the agent posted at the door to head down to the lobby and stall tanner's lawyer's when they arrive. She and Janis enter Tanner's room. He's laying in bed with a tube going into a hole in his throat. Renee asks Tanner is Tony has another base where the CIP device could be. tanner rasps for his lawyers but Renee ignores him. She offers him protection if he cooperates, but Tanner says they won't let that happen. Renee fixates on "they" and starts asking about Dubaku. Tanner tells her to go away and shuts his eyes. She grabs his face and says, "Is Dubaku here in this country? Does he have the device?" Janis stops her just as she gets a call from the agent downstairs saying Tanner's lawyers have arrived. They go out into the hall and Renee asks Janis to keep the lawyers out of the room as long as possible. Janis points out they are breaking all sorts of laws and codes and Tanner requested legal counsel. Renee badgers her until she gives in, then returns to the room. She closes the door behind her and opens the adjacent bathroom door so that when the room door opens it will hit that door, blocking it.
She goes up to Tanner and demands he tell her what he knows. He basically tells her to fuck off, so she pulls her gun and presses the muzzle against one of Tanner's bandaged wounds. "Who are you working for?!" ....Wha-...What's going on? Renee got the first "Who are you working for?!" of the season?....it...It just doesn't seem right. I get that they're trying to show that she's becoming like Jack, but there are some things in the 24 universe that are sacred, and that line is one of them. Renee presses the gun harder, but Tanner won't give in. She backs up and paces a bit, thinking of what to do. She turns back to look at him and he starts laughing. Her face hardens and she grabs his breathing tubes. He protests that she's FBI and this is illegal. "I suggest you use your last breath wisely," she replies. He tells her to go to hell. She makes a sad expression and then bends the tubes, cutting off the air. Tanner gasps for air. 11:51:08.
11:55:37. Janis is giving the lawyers the run-around. They eventually get fed up and ask a nurse at the nurse's station where their client is. She brings up his room on a screen and sees an alert for a ventilator malfunction and says he's coding. I find it hard to believe that alert wouldn't, you know, actually alert someone with a loud noise instead of just flashing in hopes that someone would eventually look and notice it. They try to get in but the door is blocked. They bang on the door for a bit until Renee opens it and comes striding out. She leads Janis away and tells her not to ask. She has her get the other agent to give her a ride back to the office.
Outside the hospital, Renee calls Agent Ass and tells him that Tony's crew has a plan to abduct Matobo, like, right now. Renee wants to get there before them and set a trap. AA says he'll contact Matobo's security detail and warn them. He gives her the address of his residence and tells her to wait for backup. He calls the head of Matobo's security and tells them to lock the Prime Minister down. The guy goes into another room and talks to Matobo and his wife in urgent French they rush out of the room and down the hallway, the security guy pushing them along. Meanwhile, the one minion from before cuts some kind of power line and says they're good to go over the radio. Emerson, Tony, and Jack enter the house and start taking down security guys. Jack spots Matobo and his wife and yells for the other guys. They chase after them as they get inside a panic room and close the door. They guys get there too late. Jack starts tearing up a wall in the storage closet behind the panic room and confirms that it's reinforced concrete. They're locked out and the room can only be opened from the inside. Tony reminds Jack that if they can't get Matobo, they can't get to Dubaku.
