Supernatural: “Malleus Maleficarum” (Episode 309)

Witchcraft or lack of dental insurance?Witchcraft or lack of dental insurance?

Wait... there was a new Supernatural on tonight? I haven't recapped anything since the mess that was Journeyman. With all the hype surrounding the return of Lost, I completely forgot about it. Two new episodes airing on a Thursday at 9pm? What month is this? Did the writers settle and I just missed it? Anyways, I swear that I didn't watch Lost first (Supernatural is finally free of its competition and ABC throws this at us?), My loyalty belongs to my Winchester boys. It was a fantastic episode to boot... none of this half-cooked, no episode title that you were seeing come out of some other Thursday shows. It may be a feast in the middle of a famine, but lets jump right and plow through it like a Survivor contestant, shall we?

Supernatural: "A Very Supernatural Christmas" (Episode 308)

Eric Kripke gives us his own twisted version of a Christmas special and I loved the hell out of it. I love it when the serious and dark shows are able to step away and do “the funny one.” Jane Espenson has become the master of this on other shows, but Eric and co-writer Jeremy Carver did a fine job here. The show had just the right of Xmas spirit for a Scrooge like me and legitimate creepiness to go along with the holiday “Ho Ho Hos”.

Supernatural: "Fresh Blood" (Episode 307)

Shut yo' mouth. I'm just talking about Gordon!Shut yo' mouth. I'm just talking about Gordon!

This week saw the return of Gordon Walker and his loyal sidekick Kubrick… but no sign of the sidekick’s sidekick. Also apparently Mercedes McNabb’s agent made excellent use of her trip to Vancouver, as this is the second CW series shot there that she has popped up on in as many weeks.  I have to say that while I wasn’t expecting the chain of events that transpired in this episode, I certainly wasn’t expecting it to wrap up the way it did.  All I can say is for them to burn through the storyline the way they did, they must have some wonderful, wonderful stuff up their sleeves.  I just hope I get to see it before next fall.

Supernatural: "Red Dawn at Morning" (Episode 306)

Boys and their toys.Boys and their toys.

One of the shows that I’m going to miss the most during the writers’ strike is definitely Supernatural. Sure, I’ll miss 24 and Lost and Battlestar Galactica, but I’m not into those shows right now, I haven’t begun their season-long story arcs. Let’s hope that the AMPTP offers the writers a fair deal and we can all get back to shows like this that they love to make and we love to watch. Supernatural is still up to par with their really early work and they’ve only improved the show by finding ways to avoid horrible stand-alone episodes (like the one about the racist truck) and instead find story lines like this one. This episode was a simple one and it’s not like a ghost ship is the most original plot point in the world, but this episode still was a great standalone giving us plenty of ghoulish eye candy and plenty more establishment on the boys’ new thorn in their side: Bela.

Supernatural: "Bedtime Stories" (Episode 305)

Nana! Don't!Nana! Don't!

While suffering under the shadow of the looming writers’ strike, I find myself counting off my favorite shows as if it was the end of their series runs (which for some it may be) and trying to cherish each episode. Hell, Supernatural is on episode five, which could be almost halfway through all that we will get for season three. I don’t think that information like that has even come close to sinking in for the average television viewing population. Enjoy your spring of game shows and singing and dancing contests.

With this episode, it appeared that we were going to get an enjoyable, but inconsequential, stand alone episode all revolving around the restaging of popular fairy tales. That is until the storyline was mostly wrapped up and I checked my handy-dandy TiVo status bar showing that we were only about three-quarters of the way through the episode…

Supernatural: "Sin City" (Episode 304)

Demon or just plain crazy?Demon or just plain crazy?

I’ve decided that Supernatural is quite legitimately my favorite television series currently airing... in this month of October. Four networks, countless cable channels and a whole slew of new fall programming that is somehow managing to stave off the axe, and I would seriously just rather be watching Supernatural. Of course shows like The Shield and Battlestar Galactica aren’t currently airing, but that’s still a great group of shows to be lumped with. This week we got a little more of Ruby the Demoness and learned a little more about just what makes those demons tick.

Supernatural: "Bad Day at Black Rock" (Episode 303)

Who's hungry?Who's hungry?

Eric Kripke and the crew have turned in another great piece of television, this time utilizing one of my favorite television writers, Ben Edlund. The creator of The Tick, Edlund is no stranger to well-executed comedy, or well-executed drama as evidenced by the excellent “Night Shifter” from last season. This episode proved no different, tying together some excellent comedic bits, while somehow finding a way to tie in significant developments to the overall story arc without seeming tacked on or awkward.

Supernatural: "The Kids Are Alright" (Episode 302)

Aww! How cute!Aww! How cute!

Ahh, parenthood. My fiancée and I have a long running debate about whether we ever want to have children. We use a point system to gauge our interest, plus one point for kid doing something cute, minus two for kid pooping on the carpet. This episode had to be worth at least negative 100 points.

In addition to Kreepy Kids, the episode also gave some more insight into the mysterious case of the Yellow-Eyed Demon, what Sam has to do with anything and a few more facts about Mysterious Blonde Chick.

Supernatural: "The Magnificent Seven" (Episode 301)

It's Demon Season.It's Demon Season.

Welcome back to the best show that no one is watching. I love this show with a love that is usually used by twenty something girls towards Buffy, by lesbians towards Xena or by Spy towards Doctor Who . I spend a lot of my time on Recapist criticizing and mocking the television I watch, but in the case of Supernatural all of my ire is reserved for the network. What does it take for The CW to become a real network? They thought that if they combined the programming power of UPN and The WB that they would end up with a real network, however instead of combining the ratings shares of the two networks, they ended up in the exact same place, if not lower than ever. For the love of god, CW shows get beat by Telemundo. I know, I know, Telemundo is popular, but come on! It’s a real shame that Supernatural has to endure this pretender network and despite a plan for only a five-year arc, I wouldn’t be surprised if this series outlasts yet another net-let.

Supernatural - "All Hell Breaks Loose, Part Two"

Wow, now that was a finale. The title was rather literal with (well, most of) Hell breaking loose thanks to the ancient ways of Samuel Colt. You can easily see how they tried to dance the line between a season finale and a series finale, with the ending set up to serve both purposes. It could have ended the series in a pinch if it had to, but Supernatural is getting another season (suck on that Veronica Mars) so thankfully they left threads out there to be followed, even if they did wrap up a major one that has been with the show since the very beginning. Less cryptic discussion of the episode after the jump...
